- Held 50th Anniversary Honorary Commencement Ceremony
Our university held the 50th Anniversary Honorary Commencement Ceremony to convey honorary diplomas to our alumni who have led the development of our country for the past half century at the Centennial Hall on September 19.
The honorary commencement ceremony was attended by 110 alumni who graduated in 1968. The attendees included alumni who brought honor to the name Sookmyung such as Jeongseon Na (honorary professor of Department of Physical Education) who was the first women basketball coach in Korea, Nakhee Seong (honorary professor of Division of Korean Language & Literature and poet) who is the author of the classics handbook “The Soul of The Analects of Confucius,” and Chansuk Park who was the first KBS open recruitment announcer and 17th National Assembly member.
The first part of the official event began with the presiding from Announcer Suyeon Lee (Division of Chinese Language & Literature, ‘06) which was then followed by the greetings from President Jungai Kang and Alumni President Jonghui Kim and the viewing of the Video of Remembrance. Next, the graduates were called to the stage to receive certificates of appreciation, and Alumni Jeongseon Na and Nakhui Seong gave their greetings as the representatives. After the greetings, the Sun Hun Dance Company, which is led by Professor Sujeong Cha, gave their congratulatory performance.
At the second congratulatory performance following the luncheon at the Han Sangeun Lounge, Professor Giyeon Lee’s opera concert “Life Is Beautiful” and talk concert “Youth Over Flowers” hosted by Alumni Chansuk Park were held. There were smiles on every face of the alumni who made the trip to their alma mater.
Alumni Sunja Kim (Department of Education, ‘68) took the mike during the talk concert and received great applause by saying “A total of 17 alumni from the department of education attended today, and some of them came from as far away as Geoje, Busan, Tongyeong, and Namhae. No matter what you did or what you achieved over all these years, I am simply glad to see you all healthy and smiling.”
President Jungai Kang said, “This 5th Honorary Commencement Ceremony this year is an occasion to commemorate and congratulate the lives of our elders who are still bringing honor to the name of Sookmyung through active social interests even at the age of 70,” and “I hope the alumni, who put on their graduation caps again a half century later, can have a meaningful time of remembrance with other alumni.”
