- Sookmyung Women’s University Introduces ‘The Essence of Korea’s Textile Art’ to China
On October 15th, Sookmyung Women’s University Museum held the <Imagery: The Color of Korea> exhibition in Beijing introducing Korea’s textile art culture with ‘The color of Korea’ as its main theme.
This exhibition is held simultaneously in the Korean Culture Center located in Beijing and also in the Beijing Garment Academy Ethnic Fashion Museum. It is part of the ‘2018 Traveling Korean Arts’ business held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This business was planned to encourage outstanding art & culture programs of Korea to expand overseas in order to introduce Korea and communicate worldwide.
The exhibition is held in both locations under the theme ‘Traditional’ and ‘Contemporary’ respectively. <Imagery: The Color of Korea - Traditional> in Beijing Garment Academy Ethnic Fashion Museum introduces Korean culture by the theme of colors and patterns that reflect human imagery. <Imagery: The Color of Korea - Contemporary> in Korean Culture Center located in Beijing exhibited works of art that features Korea’s appeal and colors under two schemes: blending of classical and contemporary linked by color and contemporary artists who reinterpreted tradition.

At the exhibition, a total of 105 artworks can be seen, including 65 pieces by Sookmyung Women’s University museum and 40 pieces by 10 contemporary artists. The museum's collection of everyday artwork preserves temporal, physical and regional characteristics and values. Contemporary textile artists have created their own works using themes of different traditions and reproduced the inspiration of the relics in a modern sense.
The museum hopes to show a sense of Korean beauty reinterpreted from a Korean tradition and modern perspective. "It will be an opportunity to inform the global stage of the contemporary nature of Korean culture and art by linking the history of color and modern art", a museum official stated.
Meanwhile, last July, in cooperation with KOFICE (Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange), Sookmyung Women’s University Museum held an exchange exhibition of traditional art works dealing with the lives of women at the Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History in South Africa. Also, through the Traveling Korean Arts business, the museum continues to communicate with the international community through activities such as introducing Korean embroidery overseas.
