The Department of TESL was established in 2011 so as to generate a professional workforce with English education theory and working skills, skills that are indispensable to gaining a competitive edge in our age of globalization. Sookmyung Women's University established the first TESOL program in Korea in 1994. Since then, Sookmyung has been recognized as having the best TESOL university course in Asia, with its TESOL master's course, a course for childhood English education, and the MATE exam accredited by the Korean government. Since this level of competence was reached by the Department of TESL, the position and quality of education has been solidified in Korea, as well as in other non-English speaking countries. This is a step forward in the field of English education to further various English teaching approaches.
Purpose of the Education
TESL major contributes to Korea and the world society by cultivating professional English educators based on education of understanding and experiences. Learning and using Englsih starts from understanding and reflecting communication, the most innate viewpoint and philosophical perspective. Based on communication as its historical background, which had enabled refinement and human civilization, education from this major contributes to improve the horizon of interrelationship and understanding of Korean society, Asian societies, non-English using countries and teaching skills. In order to achieve these goals of TESL majors, the following objectives are to be accomplished.
Objective of Education
- Cultivate understanding of humanities to understand individual, social, and historical factors and backgrounds that are related to communication.
- Improve understanding of languages and intercultural relationships to embrace and utilize internal and external changes with world history of the world that is proceeding for multicultural and multilingual societies, and to have bilingual communication skills by learning Korean and English at the same time.
- Equip students with professional knowledge and abilities to work as professionals in detailed areas and related fields of English education.
