Forging the Future Through Alumnae Networks: “2025 Sookmyung Power Network Day” Held

Sookmyung Women’s University successfully hosted the “2025 Sookmyung Power Network Day” on Tuesday, October 21, at the Conrad Seoul Park Ballroom. Now in its fourth year, the networking event brings together alumnae from across different professional fields to strengthen bonds and share pride in their alma mater. Revived this year for the first time in eight years since 2017, the event drew overwhelming interest, with pre-registration closing early and more than 250 alumnae leaders in attendance, representing a wide range of professions and industries. The event, organized by the Development Cooperation Team in the Office of External Affairs & Communication, aimed to revitalize Sookmyung’s powerful alumnae network, deepen pride in the university, and create a sustainable platform for sharing professional experiences and achievements. President Moon Si-yeun, Kim Kyung-hee, President of the Sookmyung Alumnae Association, Cho Sun-hye, Chair of the Sookmyung Cultural Foundation and CEO of GeoYoung Co., Ltd. (Pharmacy ’73), and Janet C. Lee Chair of the 120th Anniversary Sookmyung Development Committee (English ’62), were among the distinguished attendees who helped make the event a true celebration of connection and unity. A highlight of the event was the attendance of two distinguished alumnae — First Lady Kim Hye-kyung (Piano, Class of ’85) and Minister of SMEs and Startups Han Seong-sook (English, Class of ’85) — whose presence underscored the strength and influence of the Sookmyung alumnae network. Amid enthusiastic applause, First Lady Kim Hye-kyung delivered a congratulatory message: “With pride in being graduates of Korea’s first private women’s university, the dedication and passion of each of you—achieving excellence in your respective fields—are the driving forces behind Sookmyung’s success today. I deeply admire your relentless pursuit of progress and wish for the continued growth and advancement of all Sookmyung women who will lead the society of the future.” In her welcome address, President Moon Si-yeun stated, “Even after many years, we recognize and are connected by the single name Sookmyung. I am deeply grateful to all who have come together with shared hearts for the university’s growth. Sookmyung stands on the paths you have walked—now it is time to pass that legacy on to the next generation. The wisdom and solidarity of our alumnae will propel Sookmyung beyond 120 years into its next century of advancement.” Chair Cho Sun-hye of the Sookmyung Cultural Foundation encouraged participants in her commemorative speech, saying, “May all Sookmyung graduates, grounded in the founding spirit of our university, continue to grow as capable women leaders who meet the needs of our times.” In her congratulatory remarks, Minister Han Seong-sook emphasized, “Sensitivity, empathy, and flexible thinking are powerful strengths women possess. The Ministry of SMEs and Startups will continue to fully support women in realizing their potential through entrepreneurship and business activities.” The second part of the event, hosted by KBS weathercaster Bae Hye-ji (IT Engineering ’11), featured a toast led by Chair Janet C. Lee followed by a vibrant networking session. Alumnae shared dinner, exchanged business cards, and introduced their professional affiliations, fostering lively and meaningful connections across generations and disciplines. The evening concluded with a special performance by singer Jung Joon-il, sponsored by Chair Cho Sun-hye of the Sookmyung Cultural Foundation. To celebrate the successful event, the Alumni Association presented all attendees with a special commemorative “Sookmyung 120th Anniversary Wine.” Although the networking continued late into the evening, the alumni shared in the joy of being together, offering warm words of encouragement to one another and reaffirming the strong bonds and pride that unite the Sookmyung community. Participants also expressed their strong support for the university’s “Proud Sookmyung 120” vision and joined a fundraising campaign in solidarity with its goals. President Moon concluded, “I hope today’s gathering reaffirmed the pride of Sookmyung’s 120-year legacy and the collective strength of our 120,000 alumnae. Moving forward, we will continue to create diverse opportunities for networking and collaboration to shape the next 100 years of Sookmyung’s future together.”
