Museum

  • The Sookmyung Women's University Museum was established in 1971 with the objective of collecting, preserving, and showcasing materials related to culture, art, archaeology, women's life in Korea, and more. It opened on May 11, 2004, thanks to the generous donation of alumnus Kim Kyung-Ae. The museum houses various facilities for history education, research, preservation, and restoration of relics. As a cultural center, it aims to promote Sookmyung's history and tradition, contribute to women's culture, and offer enriching cultural experiences to visitors through high-quality exhibitions and research.

  • The Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum was established to promote the vision of globalization management and mass production of cultural leaders at Sookmyung Women's University. It showcases about 800 relics collected by Dr. Young Yang Chung, an international embroidery researcher, spanning from ancient to contemporary embroidery art from around the world. Dr. Young Yang Chung, the head of the museum, is both an artist and a scholar, pioneering the field of embroidery and spreading Korean artistic nature globally. The museum is equipped with exhibition, education, and research facilities, including a preservation science room for relic preservation. It serves as a professional museum, leading research and appreciation of fabric arts, while providing embroidery and woven arts education.

  • The museum houses a diverse collection of approximately 8,000 artifacts, including woodwork, pottery, clothing, paintings, and writings. Among the treasures are Geunsarok, a wood-printed Confucianism guidebook (Treasure No. 1077), important folklore materials like Heungwangun's clothing, and a handbook illustrating clothing styles for each season. The collection spans various categories, such as woodwork, china, porcelain, clothing, and valuable paintings and writings.

  • The museum displays around 800 embroidered pieces from various cultures worldwide, including Korea, China, and Japan. These include embroidered clothing, religious embroidery, and everyday life embroidery.

    • Open to university students and the public during regular hours.
    • Opening Hours: Monday - Saturday 10:00 - 17:00
    • Closed on Sundays and holidays. Temporary closures may occur for exhibition replacements, relic organization, or other necessary reasons as determined by the head of the museum.
    • Photography of artifacts requires prior approval, but reproduction of digital files or films of the relics is allowed.
    • Large items and food are not permitted inside the exhibition room.
    • When requesting group viewing or an explanation of the exhibition, please reserve the museum visiting date and time in advance.
    • Sookmyung cultural service volunteers serve as cultural PR leaders, conducting docent work for various activities to enhance the school's cultural ambiance and promote the beauty of our culture.
    • Youth Education - Offering cultural, artistic, and educational experiences to children and adolescents, the museum conducts research, publishes resource materials, and provides museum education for 3rd-6th graders during school breaks.
    • Culture & Art Time - A 3-credit liberal arts course offered by the museum to explore museums and galleries' roles and activities, providing hands-on experience in various art fields to develop essential skills.
    • Special Education Program
      • Preservation Theory and Practice (15 weeks) This course is offered twice a semester for individuals interested in museum-related careers, focusing on both theory and practical aspects. The practical component covers emergency handling, basic preservation courses, and advanced preservation of various artifacts such as ceramic, glassware, textiles, painting, photography, and paper artworks, with the aim of nurturing professional preservationists.
      • Traditional Embroidery Course (16 weeks) This course aims to provide technical proficiency in Korean traditional embroidery, including original forms, techniques, and patterns. Students will gain an appreciation for the unique beauty of Korean embroidery by comparing it with embroidery from China, Japan, and Western countries. Additionally, the course will foster design sensibilities to promote the globalization of Korean embroidery.
      • Quilt Expert Course (15 weeks) This course is designed for individuals deeply interested in quilting as a textile art form. Through theoretical lectures on colors, designs, formations, and practical learning of various quilting techniques and dyeing, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of quilting. The course is suitable for quilt instructors and those involved in creative quilt works.
