숙명에서의 추억 - 외국인 교환학생 수기

저는 고등학교 2학년 때 한국어에 흥미를 갖게 되어 2년 반 정도 한국어를 공부하고 있는 나츠키입니다. 드라마 <겨울 연가>를 보고 나서 한국어에 관심이 생겼고 대학에서 본격적으로 한국어를 공부하면 좋겠다는 생각에 도쿄 외국어대학교 조선어과에 입학하기로 했습니다. 그때까지는 한국어는 물론 한국에 대해서 특별한 감정도 없었고 한국이라고 하면 김치라는 이미지밖에 떠오르는 것이 없었습니다.
대학교에 들어가서 아무 지식도 없는 상태에서 공부를 시작했지만 지금까지 한국어 공부를 그만두고 싶어지거나 공부가 싫다고 느낀 적은 한 번도 없습니다. 한국에 와서 똑같은 의미지만 다른 표현을 하는 말이나 일본어에 없고 한국어에만 있는 말을 배운 것이 정말 재미있었고, 말을 배우다 보니 한국 사람의 사고방식도 이해할 수가 있었습니다.
해외 유학은 고등학생 때부터 꿈이었기에 대학에 들어가면 어떤 학부에 들어가도 상관없이 꼭 유학하겠다고 마음을 먹고 있었습니다. 그래서 자연스럽게 교환학생으로 한국 유학을 결심하게 되었습니다. 교환유학협정이 있는 학교는 많았지만 저는 망설임 없이 숙명여대를 선택했습니다. 이유는 2가지가 있습니다. 우선은 일본 유학생이 많은 학교에 가고 싶지 않은 것입니다. 당연히 일본 친구와 같이 있으면 도움이 되는 것도 있겠지만 문제를 자기가 스스로 해결하는 것도 큰 공부가 됩니다. 다음은 한국어를 공부하는 것은 물론 한국에서 그냥 1년 동안 생활해보고 싶다는 목적도 있었으므로 즐겁게 학창 생활을 보내려면 숙명여대가 제일 좋다고 생각했습니다. 실제로 와봤더니 숙명여대는 유학생에게 친절하고 잘 돌봐주고, 수업도 다양한 학부의 수업을 들을 수 있어 저에게 딱 맞는 대학교라는 생각이 듭니다. 무엇보다 저는 숙명여대에 와서 앞으로 해보고 싶은 일을 찾았습니다. 한국어를 외국어로서 공부하는 것은 일본에서 많이 해왔기 때문에 여기서는 어학당을 다니지 않고, 관심 있는 수업을 들으면서 같이 한국어도 공부하고 있습니다. 이것이 요즘 정말 마음에 드는 저만의 라이프스타일입니다.
지금 한국 전통춤(부채춤)이나 한국 요리를 만드는 수업도 수강하고 있습니다. 좀 어려운 점도 있기는 하지만 직접 보고 배울 수 있으므로 정말 한국어 공부에 도움이 되고, 외국인 친구뿐만 아니라 한국 친구도 알게 되고 일본에서는 하기 힘든 체험을 많이 하고 있습니다. 아직 유학 온 지 한 두 달 정도밖에 안 되었지만 매일 뭔가 새롭게 발견할 수 있습니다.
해외에서 혼자 사는 것은 생각보다 많은 것을 생각하는 기회를 저에게 주는 것 같습니다. 한국에 대해 생각하는 것도 있지만 일본에 대한 생각도 많아집니다. 유학 와서 제 생각 중에 많이 달라졌다고 느끼는 것은 외국인에 대한 생각입니다. 일본에 있을 때는 각국 외국인에 대해 한 이미지 같은 것을 갖고 있었습니다. 여기 와서 여러 나라에서 온 친구들을 만나게 되면서 제가 생각했던 부분에 맞는 사람도 있지만, 역시 사람은 나라에 상관없이 사람마다 다 다르기 때문에 한 이미지 같은 것은 없어졌습니다.
아직 시간은 많이 남아 있습니다. 일본으로 돌아가기 전에 후회하지 않도록 지금 제 눈앞에 있는 여러 가지를 도전해 보고 충실하게 지낼 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.

"Grüß Gott, allesamt!" This is a Bavarian expression to greet someone…but first let me introduce myself: My name is Kristina and I am an exchange student at Sookmyung Women’s University this year. My hometown is Bamberg, in Bavaria, therefore I wanted to say hello to you in my mother tongue. I’ve been studying at Bamberg University for two years until I decided to travel to another country to experience life at other Universities in the world. Of course all of the girls I met here asked:" Why did you decide to go to Korea?" Good question! But it is easy for me to answer this question. My home university has an exchange program going on with the Sookmyung Women’s University for several years now. So, when I had to make my decision to which country I wanted to go for exchange, I just met former exchange students. All of them said that they enjoyed their stay at the Sookmyung a lot. I also met some Sookmyung girls who were studying at Bamberg at this time. They were really nice and I appreciated to meet them. Therefore my decision was made- I thought that students from Sookmyung University are really friendly and helpful and the University had also a very good reputation.
This was also my first impression when I arrived in Korea. My Buddy picked me up at the airport. I was so glad to see her there because I probably would have never found my way to the dorm on my own. Compared to Bamberg, Seoul is a very big city! Therefore it took me some time to get used to the subway system and everything but thankfully my Buddy helped me with all those things.
The Sookmyung Buddy Group also organised a nice trip for us, so that we could get into touch with the Korean culture. We went to the Palace to learn something about Korea’s history. After an exciting day, our Buddies took us for dinner to a traditional Korean restaurant. All of the exchange students really enjoyed that day!
I was pretty impressed, as I got an invitation from the German Department at the Sookmyung, inviting me to their Oktoberfest. It was really interesting for me to see how Koreans think of Germany. Together with some students whose major is German, I enjoyed listening to German songs and watching dance performances.
Within only two months now, I got to know Korea pretty well. This is thanks to our Buddies showing us around and all the students at Sookmyung being so friendly and helpful. While writing this article I asked myself what I like best about Korea. Finding the answer was difficult because I feel really well here and there are just so many things I like. But suddenly something came to my mind: I will definitely miss Korean food when I am back in Germany! I started to love the spiciness of the food.
I notice that time is going so fast since I arrived in Seoul. In my opinion the reason for that is that all people here are so friendly and that I soon attached myself and started to feel at home at the Sookmyung Women’s University!
