Farewell to Sookmyung Women's University (편지글: 세네갈에서 온 Alassane)
It is a great pleasure and an honor for me to be the first Senegalese to attend Sookmyung Women’s University, Korea. I have been very satisfied with the administration and the teaching staff. Sookmyung is a high-ranking university and it really fits its motto: “A Gentle Power to Change the World”. I believe that it will achieve its goals inasmuch as it provides the students with an appropriate intellectual and culturally varied environment, which is both significant and relevant to their training.
The living conditions are favorable and the students have access to a range of varied and rich courses in addition to an excellent library, which testifies to the invaluable qualities of professors and to the good level of students. I have been muchover impressed in seeing an only women’s university devoid of discriminatory ideas toward men all the more because they open-mindedly admit male international students to attend the university, which is not obvious if the principles of gender-based education had to be respected.
Since November 23, 2009, Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis, Senegal, my home institution, has signed a university cooperation agreement allowing exchange programs with Sookmyung and I have the honor and privilege to be the first beneficiary of such program. I would like, at the outcome, to share this success and experience paralleled with happiness not only with the people my home university but also with all the Senegalese.
I should like to express my deep sense of gratitude to the President Dr Young Sil Han, the professors, and the administration mainly the Office of International Affairs who facilitated the trip and offered me a standard life at the Faculty and on campus. I thank them for their sense of hospitality, which helped me easily integrate Korean culture, learn it and love it, because modernity proves that the world is culturally bound. I should not also fail to mention my advisor, Dr Kim, Sang Yule (Dean of External Relations, Sookmyung), who allowed me to use his office for more comfort in my research and to have free access to his library. Find here all my appreciations of Sookmyung Women’s Universty and I highly recommend it to international students. "Kam shaa mida”!

제가 한국의 숙명여자대학교에 온 첫 세네갈인이라는 것이 저에게는 큰 영광이고 기쁘게 생각합니다. 그 동안 저를 보살펴주신 교수님들과 행정부서 직원들에게도 감사합니다. 숙명여대는 상위권 대학답게 ‘세상을 바꾸는 부드러운 힘’이라는 숙명의 모토와도 꼭 맞는 대학교라는 것을 보여주었습니다. 상당히 지적이고 문화적으로 풍부한 환경을 학생들에게 제공한다는 점을 고려하면 정말 숙명여대가 세상을 바꾸는 학교가 될 것이라 믿습니다.
숙명에서 생활여건 또한 무척 좋았습니다. 학생들이 다양하고도 유용한 강의를 수강할 수 있도록 마련된 시스템과 훌륭한 교수진과 학생들의 높은 수준을 증명하는 우수한 도서관이 있었기 때문입니다. 제가 무엇보다 감동받은 것은 숙명여대가 남성에 대해 어떠한 차별의식 없이 열린 마음으로 남자 외국인 학생을 받아준 유일한 여자대학교였다는 사실입니다. 만약 철저히 성차별적인 교육이 이루어졌더라면 가능하지 않았을 일입니다.
2009년 11월 23일부터 제 모교인 세네갈 가스톤 버거 드 세인트 루이스(Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis) 대학교는 숙명여대와 교환학생 프로그램을 위한 대외교류 협약을 체결했습니다. 영광스럽게도 제가 그 프로그램의 첫 수혜자로 숙명여대에 올 수 있는 특권을 얻게 된 것입니다. 세네갈에 돌아가면 모교에 있는 사람들뿐만 아니라 모든 세네갈인과 제가 숙명에서 경험한 모든 일과 행복했던 순간을 꼭 공유하겠습니다.
무엇보다 한영실 총장님과 여러 교수님들, 그리고 제가 학교에서 잘 적응할 수 있도록 많은 도움을 주신 국제교류팀 직원들께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 제가 한국 문화에 잘 융화되고 배우며 한국 문화를 사랑할 수 있도록 많은 노력을 기울여준 이 분들의 환대에 감사하게 생각합니다. 또한 저의 조언자이시기도 했던 김상률 대외협력처장님을 빠트릴 수 없습니다. 처장님의 도움 덕분에 논문을 무사히 마칠 수 있었습니다. 숙명여대에서 모든 일이 감사한 일이었습니다. 국제 학생들에게 숙명여대를 강력히 추천한다고 말씀 드립니다.

Thank you for your kind email. Its unfortunate my Dad has a change of plan due to my sister's upcoming wedding next Month. Due to that I even have to leave Korea earlier on December 22nd than my initially scheduled flight departure, January 12th. I will truly miss Korea and my days in Sookmyung so...so much. Am going to miss all my friends and all the lovely people I met. Am going to translate this experience back to my Home University and will forever have you(Sookmyung) at heart. The past four months of my life in Sookmyung have been to me an incredible and unforgettable experiences. Kamsahamnida, am forever thankful without. It’s been amazing sharing in your world. THANK YOU FROM PEDRO.

It all happened so fast, it was too good to be true
Far away from home to a new world, in a distant land
I discovered a home long awaiting for my arrival
With its people warmly open to accept and embrace, open to reach out
To share and to hold, I felt love again
In your world I belonged, with you I existed and in your midst, I rediscovered myself.
It all started off so lovely, that though far, yet closer more than ever to home
In your smile and peaceful eyes, I found joy, by your side I felt complete
We laughed together, shed tears together, danced together, made-merry together,
Dinned together, why can't we stay forever?
It’s all coming to an end and I can't say good bye
It hurts my heart to leave you now,
But in my mind shall you live on, and in my memories shall we be together
Under the sun we will play again, just like old times without saying goodbye

편지 감사히 잘 받았습니다. 원래 예정대로라면 1월 12일에 출국해야 하는데 다음 달에 저희 언니 결혼식이 있어서 그보다 이른 12월 22일에 한국을 떠나게 되었습니다. 생각보다 빨리 떠나게 되어 무척 아쉬운 마음입니다. 한국이 참 그리울 것이고 무엇보다 숙명에서 보낸 시간들이 무척 생각날 것 같습니다. 숙명에서 만난 모든 친구들과 따뜻하게 대해준 사람들을 잊지 못할 겁니다. 케냐에 있는 모교로 돌아가면 제가 숙명에서 경험한 일들을 글로 잘 녹여 제 마음 속에 숙명을 영원히 기억하겠습니다. 숙명여자대학교에서 보낸 지난 4개월은 믿을 수 없을 정도로 놀랍고 잊지 못할 경험으로 채워진 시간이었습니다. “Kamsa hamnida(감사합니다.)” 진심으로 감사합니다. 여러분의 세계에서 소중한 경험을 나눌 수 있었음을 진심으로 감사하게 생각합니다. 감사를 담아, 페드로.

제목: 내 고향, 숙명
너무나 빨리 일어난 일이었습니다. 사실이라고 믿기엔 너무나 좋은 시간이었습니다.
집을 떠나 먼 나라, 낯선 세계로 건너와
마침내 오랫동안 기다려온 제 고향을 찾았습니다.
따뜻하게 받아주고 꼭 안아주는 사람들이 있었기에, 먼저 손을 내밀어 주는 사람들이 있었기에
함께 나누고 함께 손잡을 수 있었기에
전, 사랑을 느낄 수 있었습니다.
여러분들의 세계에서 함께 호흡하며, 여러분들 사이에서 함께 지내며
새로운 제 자신을 찾았습니다.
첫 시작부터 아주 좋았습니다. 비록 멀고도 먼 곳이지만 숙명은 제 고향이나 마찬가지입니다.
웃음을 머금고 평화로운 여러분의 눈동자를 보면서 기쁨을 느꼈고
여러분의 곁에서 비로소 제가 완전해진 기분이었습니다.
헤어짐의 순간이 점점 다가오고 있지만 감히 작별인사를 하지 못하겠습니다.
여러분들을 떠나는 지금이 너무나 마음 아픈 순간이기에.
그러나 제 마음 속에서 여러분은 항상 살아 숨쉴 것이며
