The Sookmyung Women’s University Social Service Center’s Overseas Service Group composed of university students and faculty successfully returned from a 12-day service trip to Thailand.

The Social Service Center conducted the service activities in Thailand from Mon, Jan. 22 to Fri, Feb. 2 through the “Winter University Self-Development Overseas Service Program” hosted by the Korean University Council For Social Service. 11 students and Kim Yeon-hee from the Social Service Office traveled to Bangkok and the Samut province to directly carry out the customized service plan.

First, the Samaritan Women's Education Center, a women's vocational training organization, taught women how to make hotteok (a sugar-filled griddle cake) so that they could later turn it into a business and earn a living.

At the Samlong Childcare Center, the interior and exterior walls of were given a fresh coat of paint and Snowflake, the university mascot, was painted on the walls as a means to promote the university. In addition, taekwondo, dalgona (sugar honeycomb), and face painting activities were also conducted to share Korean culture.

A leadership program to strengthen the capabilities of women was conducted with students from Chulalongkorn University, with active culture exchange taking place while enjoying traditional games. They also introduced Korean food culture by personally making stir-fried pork lunch boxes and delivering them to 50 local households.

Through this program, students were able to carry out diverse work related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as educational service, cultural exchange, and environmental improvement. Bae Su-min (Division of Child Welfare & Studies, 21) said “I really felt the value in what we were doing when I saw the smiles on the children at the Samlong Childcare Center and the hope we were able to provide at the Samaritan Women’s Education Center. I believe the leadership program we carried out with students from Chulalongkorn University was very useful and I really hope to see them again after they’ve grown in great female leaders in their own countries one day.”

An official from the Social Service Center said, “Through programs that emphasize the strengths of our university, such as women’s leadership training and child welfare, we are able to create precious moments with a variety of people, from children to college students. I hope that the students make this an opportunity to cultivate the talents of these global women leaders, and that through an array of overseas service programs, we can help to spread the name of our university far and wide.”
