Sookmyung Women’s University Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) has commissioned its first class of 13 officers since its establishment in 2022, a first for a women’s university.

The AFROTC held a commissioning ceremony on Fri, Feb. 23 at the Air Force Hotel in Seoul for the 51st class of ROTC candidates. Over the past two years, 13 ROTC candidates have completed their education and military training and been commissioned as Air Force officers.

Starting in March 2022, the candidates trained at the school for six hours a week and ten weeks of summer basic training, where they underwent high-intensity training in military knowledge, mental combat power, military training, and leadership management. Through this training, these candidates took the first steps to becoming officers, passing their commissioning evaluations with the physical and mental leadership skills necessary for all junior officers.

The newly commissioned officers now complete their specialized training and receive their first genuine assignments. They will carry out their primary role in protecting airspace, expected to contribute by strengthening aerospace power to lead on future battlefields.

At the commissioning ceremony, President Chang Yun-keum along with Sookmyung alumni Air Force officers and the families of the new officers were in attendance. Lieutenant Kwon Shin-yeong, who achieved the top marks in her class, received the President’s Award and the ROTC Commander’s Award.  Lieutenants Choi Seo-yoon and Oh Yeon-woo each received the ROTC Central Committee President’s Award and the AFROTC Officer’s Club President’s Award.

In particular, Lieutenant Kwon is the third generation to serve in the military, her grandfather having fought in the Korean War and her father serving in the Korean Army’s 3rd Infantry Division. Lieutenant Won Yoo-gyeong is also part of an Air Force family, following in her father’s footsteps from his time as an Air Force Chief Master Sergeant.

In addition, officers with an array of backgrounds shone brightly at the event, including Lieutenant Kwak Hyun-ji, who was the first ROTC officer to pass the special selection to be an information communications officer;  Lieutenant Park Hyun-jeong, the first female candidate to lead the air weapons systems officers at the summer training; and Han Ye-won, who was selected as both the model for Sookmyung and for the Air Force while enrolled.

President Chang Yun-keum said, “Now all of you will bravely go out as Air Force officers, flying high into both the skies and space. I look forward to you all realizing your Air Force dreams with the knowledge you obtained during your studies at Sookmyung Women’s University and the growth that you will bring to both national defense and the community.”
