“Clap clap clap-clap-clap, Sookmyung is the best!”

On Fri, Mar. 22, fervent cheering for FC Sookmyung heated up the soccer match during the 2nd Korean Women’s University Sports Tournament held at Seoul National University of Science and Technology in Nowon-gu, Seoul. Sookmyung University’s cheering squad, including President Chang Yun-keum, boosted the morale of students with witty banners such as “The President is watching” and “FC Sookmyung, the pride of Sookmyung, you are so amazing!”

This year was the second annual tournament, and in addition to Sookmyung, Duksung Women’s University, Dongduk Women’s University, Seoul Women’s University, and Sungshin Women’s University participated in the tournament. Sookmyung was the defending champion after winning the first tournament last year.

Unlike last year, when faculty and staff participated in the tournament, this year only students played in the tournament, and FC Sookmyung represented the university. The matches were played in two halves of 15 minutes each, for a total of 30 minutes per match.

In the first match against Dongduk Women’s University, our players unfortunately couldn’t capitalize on several scoring opportunities. However, just before the end of the game, Kang Seo-yeon (Physical Education, ’22), captain of FC Sookmyung and last year’s MVP, scored the game-winning goal with a powerful shot.

In the second match against Seoul Women’s University, Sookmyung dominated the game with overwhelming skill. Jeong Ha-bin (Business Administration, ’23) and Nam Yeon-u (Physical Education, ’22) scored back-to-back goals to secure a 3-0 victory.

The highlight of the tournament was the final match against Duksung Women’s University. The weather had been sunny before the final, but it turned cloudy and rained during the final. The two teams battled hard and couldn’t settle the score in regular time, so they went to penalty shootouts.

Although FC Sookmyung missed two shots, our goalkeeper Jeong Ha-bin (Business Administration, ’23) made an excellent save, and the opponents’ missed shots handed Sookmyung an exciting victory with a score of 3-2.

Jeong Ha-bin, who contributed to the victory with a goal in the second game and a crucial save in the penalty shootout, said, “I was so worried when my friend missed a shot in the penalty shootout because I was afraid I might not be able to make the save,” adding, “Despite some mistakes we made today, I think we achieved great results because we worked hard together.”

Kang Seo-yeon, the captain of FC Sookmyung, said, “We prepared with the determination to win again this time and wanted to repay the school for their great interest and support by winning,” adding, “After winning the first tournament last year, the team’s morale was boosted, and I think our future activities will be carried out in a more enjoyable atmosphere after winning again this year.”

Meanwhile, the Korean Women’s University Sports Tournament plans to hold various friendly matches in tennis, basketball, badminton, and more, in addition to soccer.
