Yunkeum Chang, the president of Sookmyung Women’s University (SMU), was selected as the Korea’s Influential CEO in 2024 in the education management category. Korea’s Influential CEO, hosted by TV Chosun, is an award that publicizes cases of leadership shown by CEOs of different fields in Korea for the year. President Chang is the first university president of SMU elected through direct election by all faculty and members of the school in 2020. President Chang has been leading the dynamic and future-oriented advancement of universities by declaring Sookmyung 2030 Vision under the slogan, “The World’s Top Digital Humanities University” with three major goals: digital convergence innovation, startup incubator innovation, and ESG practice innovation. She played a significant role in promoting cooperation between universities and setting agendas in higher education by leading nationwide university organizations as the Chairperson of the Korean Association of Private University Presidents (KPU), the Seoul University President's Forum, and the Korea Association of Women’s University Presidents. She is currently serving as a member of the board of directors in the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP). During President Chang’s term in office, SMU was subsequently assigned huge projects worth more than KRW 10 billion, such as Software-centered University, Leaders in Industry-University Cooperation 3.0 (LINC 3.0), and Leading Research Center Support Project (MRC), winning contracts for projects worth a total of KRW 135 billion in financial support. President Chang also founded the Digital Humanities Center to play a role as the pivot of digital convergence research and education for the university’s digital innovation, offering creative courses and enhancing interdisciplinary studies. She established the Sookmyung Research Cluster with aims to discover specialized research areas by clustering professors of different majors, yielding notable research achievements. President Chang promoted various international exchange projects to turn SMU a global university. SMU became the first university to launch the Google Startup School program to incubate future female founders in collaboration with Google for Startups Campus. Another major achievement was the implementation of the “Sookmyung-Minerva Exchange Program” with Minerva University in the US, one of the world's top innovative universities in the world. President Chang created five new majors related to high-tech studies in the College of Engineering, including the Division of Artificial Intelligence Engineering and the Department of Data Science. She also accomplished bold future-oriented innovations by establishing software-related liberal arts courses mandatory for all students. In 2022, SMU became the first women’s university to implement Air Force ROTC programs, opening a new horizon of women's leadership in national defense. President Chang said, “This award is a product of the joint endeavor of every school member to accomplish the world’s top digital humanities university for four years.” She added, “Sookmyung Women’s University will continue building the future of education in Korea through innovative education and research.”
