Starting on Tuesday, May 2nd, Sookmyung Women＇s University will provide students with breakfast for just KRW 1,000. Sookmyung Women＇s University has been selected for the second phase of the “KRW 1,000 breakfast” program for the year 2023, which is being conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion, and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
From May 2nd until November 30th, the university will be operating the “KRW 1,000 breakfast” campaign at the Sunheon Building Cafeteria. Meals will be provided to 100 students per day every Monday to Thursday (excluding vacations) from 8 AM to 9 AM. The university anticipates that 7,600 students will benefit from the campaign, which will contribute to reducing the cost of living for students. The breakfast consists of three side dishes and one soup for a healthy and balanced meal.
On the first day, the menu consisted of multi-grain rice, dried pollack and beef broth soup, steamed tofu, stir-fried kimchi, broccoli, pickled radish, and roasted seaweed. The Sunheon Building Cafeteria was bustling with students who came to have breakfast before their classes. Within an hour, all 100 meals for the day were provided, as the program quickly reached its maximum capacity. President Jang also visited the cafeteria and had breakfast with the students, engaging in conversations with them.
“Thanks to this program, I can have a warm Korean meal with soup for breakfast,” said Lee Hyun-jin, a student from the Department of Law, Class of 2021. “I think this would be a great option for students who live near the school or in the dormitory to have breakfast before their first class.”
Sookmyung Women＇s University is also running a fundraising campaign for the “KRW 1,000 breakfast” program. In this program, the cost of the breakfast is shared between the government and the students, with each paying KRW 1,000, while the remaining amount is funded by the university. The university plans to focus on fundraising efforts by providing special gifts and thank-you cards to donors.
“We plan to conduct a fundraising campaign for providing high-quality breakfast to our students, alumni, and local community through the ＇KRW 1,000 breakfast＇ program,” said President Jang. “We hope that our students will have a nutritious breakfast and start their day with energy.”
