The Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum Hosts the Largest Scale Online Exhibition Project with Google

Sookmyung Women’s University’s Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum(C.E.M), along with Google, will host the largest online virtual exhibition with 3,000 year fashion history.
Google’s online platform that exhibits works of art ‘Google Arts & Culture’ is a collaborative effort of ‘We Wear Culture’ with 180 cultural organizations from 42 countries and the Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum at Sookmyung Women's University, participating as one of the representatives of Korea.
This project is engaged with the prominent cultural organizations such as the ones in New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, São Paulo and 6 other organizations including the Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum that Korea participated; Seoul Design Foundation, Gyeonggido Museum, Dankook University Seokjuseon Memorial Museum, Ewha Women’s University Museum and Arumjigi Foundation.
Google Arts & Culture has used its cutting edge technology to project everything from ancient silk roads to elegant stories from Versailles to the backdrops of British punk and modern apparel. The largest exhibition of 3,000 years of fashion history in the world, including Marilyn Monroe’s high heels and Chanel’s black dresses will be exhibited right on your hands.
This exhibition was finalized with the collaboration with fashion experts, curators, designers, worldwide universities and museums. Furthermore, the NGO illustrates that fashion is part of a culture, form of art and that gives off multi-faceted influences as an output of genuine craftsmanship. The fashion collections that were preserved through Google’s cutting-edge technology, such as virtual reality, 360° videos, street view and high resolution ‘Giga Pixel’, will be opened to the public.
The Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum concluded a business concordat with Google Cultural Institute last June and took photographs of around 20 pieces of representative artifacts. Google Art Camera captured hundreds of close-up images, which are organized all in one to check the sophisticated details are invisible to the naked eye, to create the collection of images.
In addition, you can walk through the exhibition without visiting the museum, in person, through the indoor street view of the exhibition room of the C.E.M. You can see the high resolution pictures and the information of the collection with just one click. Finally, online visitors can view online exhibition “Secrets of the Thread”, “Wearable Art” and “Threads of Splendor” produced by the C.E.M and confirm the story about the history and flow of embroidery art and its impact on modern fashion.
Amit Sood, the director of Google Arts & Culture stated, “Jeans that we are wearing now or the black dress in the closet actually has stories of extending over several centuries. What we are wearing right now is genuine culture and works of art.” He explained, “I hope that people have time to learn stories of fashion through this exhibition that they can enjoy with mobiles or laptops.”

TheChung Young Yang Embroidery Museum
Jung Yung Yang embroidery museum opened on May,11, 2004. Dr. Young Yang Chung, the world-scale embroidery expert, donated around 600 collections of embroideries that she have collected through her life. The museum collects, preserves, exhibits eastern Asian-centered embroidery and textile heritage and works on studies in terms of them. Special exhibitions and education activities take place each year.
