The Research Institute of Asian Women selected for “2019 NFS Symposium Support Project”

Our university’s Research Institute of Asian Women (Director So-jin Park) won the final selection for the “2019 National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) Symposium Support Project (humanities and social science category)” and is to receive 20 million won support.
According to the selection for this project, the Research Institute of Asian Women plans to observe the Korean Wave contents “K-Pop” and “K-Contents” from a gender perspective based on the topic of “The Korean Wave, Gender, and Transnational Cultural Community,” and hold a symposium that can shed light on the phenomenon of Asian fans becoming a transnational cultural community through the Korean Wave.
The symposium which is to be held at our university’s Centennial Hall’s Shinhan Bank Hall on November 7 (Thu) this year is expected to be participated by researchers in Korea and from East Asian countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Brunei. In particular, Professor Khairunnisa Ibrahim from the University of Brunei Darussalam will interpret the “BTS Fever” from the perspective of reviving positive masculinity, and Professor Hanafi Hussin from the University of Malaya will present on the topic of masculinity and femininity revived in the pop culture of Korea and East Asian regions.
The Research Institute of Asian Women solidified its status as the pivotal research organization with the selection of the 2019 symposium support project following the “2019 global educational support project (Apr. 1, 2019 ~ Jan. 30, 2020) in April of last year. The research institute officials said, “This is the fruition of international exchange activities which have continued through KoSASA (Korean Studies Association of Southeast Asian),” and “We hope the upcoming symposium that is to become the place of academic exchange on the Korean Wave and gender topics among the KoSASA member universities can contribute to the sustainable and active research and educational exchanges between our school and other universities.”
