Achievement Presentation of the 2019-2nd Semester Self-directed Career Planning Project

The 2019-2nd Semester Self-directed Career Planning Project was held at the Han Sang-eun Lounge of Sookmyung Women’s University’s Centennial Hall on January 15.
The Self-directed Career Planning Project is a student-designed curriculum where students seek out their own academic advisors and plan lectures in consideration of their career paths, major competencies, etc. to produce the desired results according to the subsequent activities during one semester. The project was introduced at the first semester of 2019 in order to provide differentiated educational services by reflecting the rapidly changing social demands of the fourth industrial revolution and to provide an opportunity to satisfy the intellectual curiosity of the students based on creativity, without being bound by the fixed courses offered in the relevant major.
In the second semester, a total of 22 students from 9 teams participated in the program and presented their results after conducting self-directed education on diverse topics such as AI programming development, picture book production project, Korean car brand launching, and brain science research.
The presentations were attended by President Jungai Kang, Vice President Mi-gyeong Seong, along with academic board members and academic advisors, who observed and reviewed the results of their students. Through the 5-minute presentations, the students introduced their projects’ purpose and operation process, as well as sharing their lessons learned, shortcomings, and experiences.
Shortly after the presentation, the judges tallied their scores and Vice President Mi-gyeong Seong delivered the evaluation results. Vice President Mi-gyeong Seong said, "In recent years, there have been a lot of classes in which students take the lead in designing and completing their curricula. In fact, professors are somewhat unfamiliar with such methods because they are used to the regular classroom environment” and “Today was a chance for us to also learn from the students and everyone deserves applause for their participation alone.” She also added, “After seeing the results, I am confident that many more students will continue to participate in the program this year.”
The First Prize was awarded to Ji-yeon Park, a student from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. Ji-yeon Park was praised for her report on the topic of science in Marvel's worldview, a report that uncovered scientific questions about the hero characters in the Marvel movies from the perspective of chemical and biological science. Ji-yeong Park said, “This project was a great opportunity for me to experience proactive learning because I was able to combine my major with the things I like such as Marvel movies.”
The Second Prize were given to the Team Amnesiacs (건망진 사람들) (Hui-won Kim, So-yeong Park, Seo-yeon Lim, Ye-rim Ji / Division of ICT Convergence Engineering) and Team Olibrain (올리브레인) (Min-seo Kim / Department of Statistics) who presented “My own artificial intelligence programming.” The Participation Prize went to Team Bae-Ju-Eun (배주은 사람) (Chan-ju Kim, Monica Bae / Department of Painting, Jae-eun Yu / Department of French Language & Culture) and Team Strays (오락가락) (Hyeon-jin Kim / Department of Mathematics, Eun-su Bae / Division of Economics).
Sookmyung Women’s University plans to expand and reorganize the self-guided career design courses that have been established as liberal arts since last year to divide them into introductory and advanced courses. There are also plans to award academic credits for the courses (up to 6 credits per study) under the approval of the faculty in charge of the majors. In addition, based on the know-hows from the self-directed career development contest and the self-directed career design curriculum during 2017~2018, the university plans to launch student-designed majors starting from the first semester and complete the design for student-customized curricula.
