In commemoration of “UAE-Korean Cultural Dialogue” Sookmyung Women’s University Museum is to hold an online exhibition “The Past and Present of Korean Embroidery” with the Korean Cultural Center in the United Arab Emirates until June 24 (Thursday).

In celebration of “2020-2021 Year of UAE-Korean Cultural Dialogue,” this exhibition is available for free at a special exhibition page www.K-Museum.com and Google's global online exhibition platform, “Google Arts & Culture,”artsandculture.google.com). In addition to Korean and English, Arabic is also especially supported for this exhibition. It is expected that various works will be introduced on the subject of the past and present of Korean embroidery, which is regarded as the core of traditional art and living art, and spread Korean traditional culture to the United Arab Emirates as well as the world.

Online visitors will be able to see works encompassing the whole of Korean embroideries, such as ▲Hyungbae (badges) ▲Husu (clothing) ▲Royal embroidery ▲Living embroidery ▲Folding screen embroidery ▲Modern and contemporary embroidery, and feel the delicate beauty revealed through the work and the sincerity and hope that emanate from the fingertips.

In particular, the “Geumsa Ssanghakmun Hyungbae (rank badge of a civil official with double cranes embroidered in couched gold threads)” and “Jasu Chochungdo Byeongpung (folding screen with the drawings of plants and insects)” among the exhibited works are revealed as gigapixel images taken with the super-high resolution “art camera” of Google Art & Culture, so viewers can appreciate the texture that can’t be observed with the naked eye at the actual exhibition.

Museum Director Se-jun Kim said, “This event is very meaningful because we can hold online special exhibitions in connection with the Korean Cultural Center in the United Arab Emirates and show exhibitions in Arabic in celebration of the year of cultural exchange between Korea and UAE,” and “this exhibition is expected to serve as an opportunity to spread Korean traditional art to all over the world, including the UAE.”

Meanwhile, Sookmyung Women’s University Museum and Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum have each partnered with Google Art & Culture to allow anyone in the world to view the exhibitions of these museums for free on the Google Art & Culture website or mobile app. The two museums are currently holding a total of 10 online exhibitions at Google Art & Culture.
