FROZEN, the autonomous vehicle team, made it to the finals with the best performance in the country at the International Student EV Car Competition.

Team FROZEN of Sookmyung Women’s University, led by professor Dong-hoon Shin of Mechanical Systems Engineering, will advance to the finals in the autonomous vehicle category at the ‘2021 International Student EV Car Competition’ hosted by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA) and the Korea Auto-Vehicle Safety Association (KASA).
The International Student EV Car Competition is a competition for college students designed to foster global talent to lead the automobile industry in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and advance into the society of science and engineering professionals. About 40 universities participated in the preliminary round in the autonomous vehicle category. Experts on self-driving cars reviewed each team's research plans, and a total of 18 universities made it to the final round.
Team FROZEN, led by Dong-hoon Shin, a professor of Mechanical Systems Engineering, is composed of nine students from the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering and Computer Science. They ranked seventh in the preliminary round and achieved a successful advance to the finals. Team FROZEN is the only team among 18 teams that competed in the tournament for the first time and is honored as the first women's university team to advance to the finals.
In the preliminary round, team FROZEN announced a research plan focusing on the results of experiments and technical research of autonomous vehicles conducted by Smart Mobility with Healthcare Management (SMHM), a convergence track system. The technology utilization plan was announced under the themes of autonomous vehicles'▲ Crosswalk Recognition Mission ▲ Static Obstacle Avoidance Driving Mission ▲ Intersection Straight Driving Mission ▲ U-turn Sign Recognition Mission, which deemed excellent.
Prof. Shin said, "By advancing to the finals, we have proven that our university is a top-notch institution in the field of autonomous vehicles and smart mobility. I want to make every effort to enable our university to compete at the final in October."
Meanwhile, the finals of the International Student EV Car Competition will be held at the Korea Transportation Safety Authority's Automobile Research Institute for two days on October 1 & 2. Teams that advanced to the finals in the autonomous vehicle category will compete with 17 items including temporary suspension on crosswalks, lane recognition driving, and dynamic obstacle recognition.
