Sookmyung Interpretation Volunteers, a leadership group of Sookmyung Women’s University, successfully held the Hanbyul Language Mentoring program in collaboration with the Yongsan-gu Government Office from Monday, August 2nd to Friday, August 13th.

Hanbyul Language Mentoring is a mentoring program that Sookmyung Interpretation Volunteers’ 20th delegation (Eunjae Kim, Daeun Kim, Jieun Yoo, Jiwoo Kim, Haeun Lee) organized in conjunction with the Yongsan-gu Governmental Office and Sookmyung Women’s University’s student support center. As Sookmyung Women’s University is located in Yongsan-gu, this was a meaningful opportunity for the student members of Sookmyung Interpretation Volunteers to donate their language abilities for the good of the local community. The goal of the program was to teach middle school students in Yongsan-gu, making sure that they don’t have difficulties while having fun learning foreign language conversations. The classes were conducted through a video conferencing platform, Zoom.

The program was free of charge and offered a variety of specific classes according to students’ language proficiency, including: ▲Beginners’ English Conversation ▲Intermediate English Conversation ▲Advanced English Conversation ▲Basic Japanese Conversation ▲Beginners’ Japanese Conversation. Classes were held 3 times a week from 10 AM to noon for a total of 120 minutes. The classes provided personalized language education focused on open-ended conversation... Through small-scaled and communication-oriented classes, students received immediate feedback by talking freely with the mentors using e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-ns they learned that day.

The mentoring sessions’ conversation-oriented classes ranged from basic knowledge of languages to frequently used e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-ns. The mentors sought to improve not only the joy of learning, but also learning effectiveness through various and creative class materials such as quest games and balance games. Additionally, the classes also used audiovisual materials as along the lines of TED speeches, YouTube videos, PPT presentations, and popular songs.

The mentoring finished successfully on the 13th (Friday) of August with students giving presentations on free topics in languages they studied. After the conclusion of the mentoring program, the members of Sookmyung Interpretation Volunteers agreed that even in the COVID-19 situation, the classes provide an opportunity to learn the illustrious value of ‘communication’ and the importance of building a bond between instructors and learners.

Yoojin Kim, a member of the 19th cohort Sookmyung Interpretation Volunteers who participated as a mentor for the Beginners’ English Conversation class, said, “Thanks to the students who participated with passion, the mentoring was a great opportunity for me, too… I could feel the joy and the worth of sharing my knowledge.”
