The Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center (Executive Director, Professor Jung-in Jo) of Sookmyung Women’s University held the UNESCO-UNITWIN Global Intensive Workshop and Hackathon for 5 days from December 6 to 10.

This event was part of the UNESCO-UNITWIN project supported by the Ministry of Education, and it was conducted for 30 graduates from partner universities, who achieved excellent results in the ICT & leadership online competency strengthening education conducted from August until November of this year, and 6 participants from Sookmyung Women’s University’s Sookmyung competency strengthening workshop.

The hackathon was held under the theme of “Empowering women through ICT and leadership education” of the UNESCO-UNITWIN project, and a total of three detailed challenges were presented together: ▲ Find solutions to end gender bias and discrimination online for gender equality, ▲ Find solutions to foster women entrepreneurs for sustainable development, and ▲ Find solutions to help ethnic minorities & women in rural areas.

Thirty-six students from 5 universities were divided into leadership and ICT fields, respectively, during the competition. In addition to intensive leadership education on the themes of entrepreneurship in the era of digital transformation, ESG and women, and gender equality in the ASEAN region, they attended practical ICT intensified lectures such as scikit-learn machine learning, as well as, HTML and CSS for web development.

Participating students have been conducting self-directed learning until the December competition after being exposed to various concepts and web technologies related to women leadership in the last online education. As a result, they presented various ideas, such as a chatbot for providing correct information to maintain gender equality, a website for selling agricultural products exclusively for female farmers, and a mobile application for women's empowerment education, by utilizing ICT technologies such as HTML, CSS, and deep learning.

This year's hackathon winning team was Group C, which created a website to efficiently utilize female workforce in the era of digital transformation. In an interview, the winning team shared their feelings and said, "The key was to provide a solution for effectively consuming agricultural products with poor marketability so that it could be applied directly to women farmers as well as local women to strengthen their capabilities."

Executive director Jung-in Jo thanked the participating students for their strong commitment to women's empowerment and active participation in this workshop, and said, "I hope the participating students were able to develop the knowledge needed to become future female leaders and gained global networking experience through the ICT and leadership programs.”
