The “2022 Sookmyung Art Festival,” which was presented by Sookmyung Women’s University from May 24th (Tue) to 28th (Fri) at the Cheongpa Gallery on the Second Foundation Campus, came to a successful conclusion with the participation of more than 800 spectators.

To commemorate the 116th anniversary of Sookmyung's founding, the Sookmyung Art Festival is an event designed to broaden the artistic horizons of visitors and provide opportunities for cultural experience at the campus gallery by providing a place where alumni can unite and appreciate works displayed at famous art galleries.

It was held in the form of an art fair hosted by Sookmyung Women’s University and jointly hosted by the College of Fine Arts and the Sookmyung Cultural Foundation to introduce and sell the works of alumni artists who are active in the art world. In particular, part of the sales proceeds were donated to the school development fund, which is said to have become a new model for social contribution through art.

At the festival, a total of 230 works were submitted by senior artists with long careers and 88 young artists who are becoming a hot topic among the MZ generation. Various works such as western and Korean paintings, metals, ceramics, wood lacquer crafts, textiles, etc. were exhibited, attracting the attention of visitors.

Among the participating artists, Ae-ri Lee, who is famous for her ground cherry art, has held 69 solo and 680 group exhibitions around the world, and has been awarded the 33rd Best Artist of the Year and the Special Artist Award, and is a representative artist of Korean painting. Artists such as Sara Lee, who is well known for her pop art using teddy bears, and Boo-hee Bok, who expresses human emotions through the properties of crystal powder and stone, were also available at the gallery.

At the opening ceremony held on the afternoon of the 24th, about 100 students and alumni attended the opening ceremony, including President Yunkeum Chang, Sookmyung Cultural Foundation Chairman Sun-hye Cho, and Alumni Association President Kyung-hee Kim to celebrate the historic first start of the art festival. In particular, overseas branches such as Australia and senior alumni gathered in large numbers to add to the meaning of the festival. In addition, the Sookmyung Wine Fair and the Snowflake Coloring Event were held, providing a place for a comprehensive experience where you can enjoy not only art, but also painting and wine tasting in one place.

The festival has been viewed to have become a local festival that not only alumni but also current students and Yongsan-gu residents come to visit. Office of Fundraising and Development in charge of event operation and fund-raising said, “With the meaningful participation of alumni artists who love Sookmyung, a framework of a virtuous cycle has been successfully established to exhibit works, donate development funds, and further expand the status of a cultural-leading university,” and “we would like to thank the alumni artists and many interested people who visited the exhibition for the success of the Sookmyung Art Festival.”
