Sookmyung University signed an MOU with China’s prestigious Nanjing University on Sep. 16 that pledges to implement a student exchange program and expand academic exchange.

Nanjing University, founded in 1902 as a national university in Nanjing, China, is one of the most prestigious universities in the country, along with Peking University and Tsinghua University. The university ranked 133rd on the 2023 QS World University Rankings and is also in the C9 League, the Chinese equivalent of the Ivy League.

With this MOU, Sookmyung intends to discuss plans for cooperation with Nanjing University in academic fields such as joint research and symposiums.

Sookmyung students will now have the opportunity to attend Nanjing University as exchange students thanks to the MOU. Both universities will operate a student exchange program in which students may participate for up to one year. If more students apply than the allowed maximum, a self-funded student exchange program will also be available to pay tuition at their own expense for both universities.

Meanwhile, after signing the agreement, President Jang attended the Nanjing Forum co-hosted by Nanjing University and the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies. Speaking at the forum on the topic of “Civilization, Science and Technology, and Common Values,” she introduced the digital education and startup programs on which Sookmyung Women’s University focuses.

President Jang said, “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we realized that it was very important to not only provide laptops or mobile devices, but also the capability to utilize them,” adding, “Sookmyung Women’s University is teaching digital skills such as coding to elementary, middle, and high school students and operating a digital education program that empowers women in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Jang said, “Sookmyung provides a curriculum where students can think and realize their own startup ideas to expand female-led startups and has also built a metaverse campus where they can virtually interact.”

A Nanjing University delegation, including Vice President Lu Yanqing, visited Sookmyung in June following an introduction by Park In-guk, Chairman of the Sookmyung Academy. At that time, Liu invited President Jang to the Nanjing Forum while discussing cooperation plans between the two universities.
