To celebrate the national Chuseok holiday, a meaningful event was held for international students to experience traditional Korean food and games.

The Office of International Affairs held “A Chuseok Event with International Students” on the first floor of the Global Lounge of the Centennial Hall in the afternoon on Tue, Sep. 26.

International students, exchange students, and exchange students from Minerva University who were celebrating Chuseok in Korea for the first time participated in the event. Students from the GPM of the International Student Service Team and URINK from the International Cooperation Team helped with the event to foster friendship among the student body.

The event was held to assist international students at Sookmyung safely adapt to life in Korea. At the same time, it was a good opportunity for the university authorities to identify issues and support academic and life essentials.

International students had fun experiences playing traditional Korean games for the first time, such as pitch-pot, gonggi, and making tops. Traditional foods, such as songpyeon and rice snacks that were provided during games were also well received.

Students responded positively, saying, “It was fun because I was able to easily experience these traditional Korean games,” and, “I was happy to learn about a new culture.”

“It was meaningful that students could be exposed to Korean culture by experiencing folk games and eating songpyeon while celebrating Chuseok,” Jeon Se-jae, head of the Office of International Affairs, said. “We will continue to develop programs for students to experience and enjoy various aspects of Korean culture,” he added.
