U.S. New Jersey’s First Lady, Tammy Murphy (L), and President Jang Yoon-geum (R)

On Thu, Oct. 19, Sookmyung Women's University invited Tammy Snyder Murphy, the first lady of New Jersey in the United States.

Tammy Murphy is the wife of Phil Murphy, the governor of New Jersey, and a leading figure in the United States Democratic Party as a candidate for the next presidential election. As she has always been interested in women and family issues, she visited Sookmyung, the cradle of Korean women’s education, among many schools.

She is fond of Korean culture as she showed the will to dress up in hanbok in 2021 to participate in the first “Hanbok Day” ceremony, which was held in a small city in New Jersey.

President Jang welcomed and conversed with Tammy Murphy, introducing her to the university’s key areas, including the Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum and the Le Cordon Bleu - Sookmyung Academy.

Lady Murphy hosted a meeting between Sookmyung Women's University and Dr. Joe Bertolino, the president of Stockton University, leading to a successful conclusion of an agreement between the two universities. Stockton is the state university of New Jersey and a school that has secured a robust position in the field of culture. The two schools agreed on reinforcing cooperation, which includes sharing academic exchanges, focusing on the Division of Culture, Tourism & Hospitality Management, and operating exchange student programs.

Later, President Jang, Lady Murphy, President Bertolino, and other key figures attended a class at "Le Cordon Bleu - Sookmyung Academy," which is jointly operated between Sookmyung and Le Cordon Bleu. Le Cordon Bleu is renowned as the world’s best cooking school.

Lady Murphy said, “I am pleased to see that the two countries could take a step closer to each other by inviting more Korean students to New Jersey.” She added, “Sookmyung Women’s University students will earn a chance to join the United States’ best hotel management (hospitality) program by studying at Stockton University.”

President Jang stated, “This partnership is a token of the two countries’ will to innovate global education. I hope Stockton University students will flourish with their passion for academia at Sookmyung, the school that has been the backbone of Korean women’s education since its establishment by the Empire of Korea in 1906.”
