A cold snap hit Korea on Thursday, December 21. Despite the harsh weather, Sookmyung Women's University students handed out warm bungeoppang (fish-shaped bread) and citron tea to cleaning and security staff on campus.

Ten undergraduates invited a bungeoppang maker, who normally sells the fish-shaped treats close to Hyochang Park Station, onto campus to make the bread from 10 AM. The bread, colloquially known as “H.P. Bungeoppang” among students, has been loved by Sookmyung Women's University students for a long time, resulting in long lines to get some. As it was right before Christmas, the students also wore Santa hats and Rudolph antlers.

The students planned this event to express gratitude to Sookmyung staff for working hard for the betterment of the university in 2023. The warmth of bungeoppang warmed the hearts of the staff on such a cold day, when the temperature dropped to as low as -20°C.

One of the students who planned the event, an undergraduate majoring in Education named Kim Da-young said, “There are a lot of people working hard behind the scenes to make our school life enjoyable. We wanted to give back by having bungeoppang made on campus as a thank you.”

This event was one of this year’s “Sookmyung-Impact” events to wrap up 2023 and welcome a new year. Sookmyung-Impact provides KRW 100,000 per person to 100 students. Students then use the funds to plan activities for the local community, either individually or in groups.

A variety of activities are planned for the future, including providing cleaning staff with gloves to represent a “warm touch.” “This project allows students to showcase their power to change the world through meaningful activities that give back to the local community,” a representative of the Student Support Center said.
