Research Institute of Women’s Health, selected for the Ministry of Education’s “Infrastructure Advancement Project”

Sookmyung Women’s University’s Research Institute of Women’s Health (RIWH) was selected for the “Infrastructure Advancement Project” supported by the Ministry of Education, the National Research Foundation of Korea, and the National Research Facilities and Equipment Center.
The RIWH will receive funds of KRW 6.7 billion in total for five years for the “Spatiotemporal Multiomics-based Mechanism Study and Medicine Development for Musculoskeletal Disorders” project. Professor Young Yang of the Division of Biological Sciences will take charge as the study director, and Professors Gyu-Un Bae and Kyo Bin Kang of the Division of Pharmacy, Professor Kyung Min Choi of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Professor Yong Hwan Kim and Jung- Bok Lee from the Division of Biological Sciences will join the team.
Professor Yang is planning to establish a spatiotemporal multiomics system for bone diseases at the RIWH. The system will consist of high-tech research equipment, including single cell spatial analysis system, high resolution mass spectroscopy, and single fluorescence molecule laser microdissection. Through this, the research team will develop data on spatiotemporal multiomics and build an integrated library to comprehensively understand various disorders and accelerate the discovery of new biomarkers and targets for treatment.
In particular, the RIWH will build an integrated system for spatiotemporal multiomics to conduct research on age-related musculoskeletal disorders which presents several difficulties. Age-related musculoskeletal disorders are progressive diseases that require different treatment strategies depending on the patient's progress of the disease. A suitable treatment remains yet to be discovered, with the cause for the condition still unknown.
The RIWH will also collaborate with the Hospital for Special Surgery, a top orthopedics hospital in the US, for globally acknowledged research. The collaboration is expected to present a new model for collaborative research to Sookmyung Women’s University, as there is no university hospital in the institution.
Professor Yang said, “The project will provide data services using high-tech equipment and opportunities for collaboration to domestic and international biologists, which will globally advance RIWH's status.”
