The “2019-1 Semester Self-directed Career Planning Project,” hosted by our university’s Office of Career Development, was held at the second floor of the campus’ Snow Bridge on July 2.

The Self-directed Career Planning Project (hereinafter “the self-directed project”) is a “student planning curriculum” where a student plans a 15-week curriculum on one’s own related to one’s career/major competencies, etc., submits the results through according activities, and receives credits for the work.

The curriculum was first incorporated in this year’s first semester in line with the increase in demand for curricula that enable inspection of self-competencies and advancement in line with the emphasis of individuality, creativity, and autonomy in the age of the 4th industrial revolution. The students actively conducted their tasks for the semester by not only planning specific educational goals and methods of achievement on their own or by forming teams, but also by personally liaising with academic advisors. As a result, 14 out of 15 teams were able to complete their projects to the end.

On this day of excellent achievement presentation, 9 student teams presented their projects with President Jungai Kang, Vice President Mi-gyeong Seong, and judges such as Dean of Academic Affairs In-chan Park, Dean of Strategy & Planning Jung-san Oh, and Dean of Student Affairs Hye-yeong Lee in attendance. The students introduced their project planning and results during the given 3~5 minutes and also gave a detailed description of what they had learned through the progress. The judges carefully listened to the students’ presentations and quenched their curiosity with questions.

The first prize of the presentation went to the “Jeonjin Nunsong” Team, which developed an apparatus for finger rehabilitation therapy by using the principle of piano playing. The team’s design enabled the patients requiring finger rehabilitation therapy to focus on continuous rehabilitation with interest by creating an apparatus that provided sound and visual pressure value data when the patients pressed the apparatus like a piano keyboard.

Meanwhile, our university plans to expand the self-planned curriculum and furthermore create new linked self-planned majors as a part of improving educational curricula customized to social demands in order to allow the students to freely think outside their majors and take interest in the fields that interest them. The officials of the Office of Career Development said, “As we have learned the potential for success through the operation of the pilot program this semester, we plan to expand the range of acceptable credit system and develop the program into a representative experiential development program which supports self-directed growth.”
