Sookmyung Women’s University’s Research Institute of Women's Health (Director: Professor Young Yang, Division of Biological Sciences) was finally selected for the 2021 Core-Facility Support Project supported by the Ministry of Education in the science and engineering category. With this project selection, the Research Institute of Women's Health is to receive 3.6 billion won for six years to build and operate the “Chronic and Metabolic Disease Research Support Center,” and promote the center's independence from 2027 to 2030.

The Core-Facility Support Project is jointly hosted by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Basic Science Institute and was prepared to create specialized research centers for each research field. In particular, it aims to improve university R&D capabilities and create an efficient research ecosystem with research support facilities and operating personnel that provide research mentoring beyond simple equipment operation and data generation.

With the selection of this project, Professor Yonghwan Kim of the Division of Biological Sciences, who is in charge of the research, is expected to maximize research efficiency by accumulating research equipment in the Core-Facility and nurturing dedicated equipment operation personnel as the head of the center. In addition, teams from the Division of Biological Sciences, Division of Pharmacy, and Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering will participate to support all processes of metabolic disease research, from the use of research equipment to research data analysis and joint research, to both researchers inside and outside the school.

Yonghwan Kim, the director of the Chronic and Metabolic Disease Research Support Center, said, "The establishment of the Chronic and Metabolic Disease Research Support Center is not only to provide researchers with an efficient research environment, but also provide an opportunity to support various research by introducing the latest high-performance research equipment," and “we will grow into an international center with research competitiveness and contribute to securing future international source technologies.”

In addition, Professor Young Yang, director of The Research Institute of Women's Health, said, "After the Research Institute of Women's Health was selected as the 2021 university-focused research institute, the selection as a Core-Facility is expected to create synergy in joint research, and we hope to lead a world-class biomedical science research.”
