Different Experience of Foreign Students along with Sookmyung Culture Exchange

Some foreign students studying in our university set out on April 2 last for one night and two days to experience walking along the way around palace in the period of Joseon Dynasty. Each 10 undergraduate students and foreign students studying in our university, and Sookmyung culture exchange under Korea Culture Institute attended this event, which was named “A Very Different Experience in Seoul”

Starting from reading “Sejong’s story” and “the story of Yi Sun Sin” at Gwanghwamun Square, the event is followed by Gyeongbok Palace (Changing of the guards ceremony), walking along the way around palace in the period of Joseon Dynasty (8 sceneries at Bukchon), making traditional mask and best photo contest. The students learned Korean traditional culture of ondol and madang at Gahoe Korean-style house experience hall, which had been a lodge before, and came to understand Korean traditional culture by playing the games such as Jegichagi and Yut. Different from existing Korean culture programs, this program features each foreign student is accompanied with a Korean student over the course and the effects of introducing Korean culture is increased considerably.

“A Very Different Experience in Seoul” also provides an opportunity for Korean students to really exchange with foreign students which will help them cultivating global mind. The students of Sookmyung culture exchange instruct the undergraduate students who are to become partner of foreign students in the matters to be met throughout the course where the students from different countries come to understand Korean culture and it will also become the medium for them to communicate with each other. Myung Hyeon Park (Management 4), chairman of Sookmyung culture exchange said: “I desire to develop diversified culture exchange programs to provide Sookmyung’s people more opportunity for sharing Korean culture.”

Korean Culture Institute said: “we will make efforts to improve Korean culture exchange program for Sookmyung culture exchange and extend the program into all fields to meet the needs of the undergraduate students and foreign students for varied culture.”
