On the last day of classes, August 13th, a workshop exhibition was held in the University of Sydney Gallery. Under the theme “A Journey to Sydney,” students exhibited and fluently explained their works to faculty and students of Sydney, leaving a lasting impression behind.

Soonsun Hwang, the dean of the College of Arts commented that “students here in Korea often work on their art quite nervously, being overly conscious of their professors and other students. But there in Sydney, students were at ease working on their works of art because the professors there gave some advice and waited patiently for them to finish, and assistant technicians were always standing by, so that our students could attend the classes with a more relaxed frame of mind. This kind of experience will help them broaden out their perspective and understanding of their major.

The interchange workshop between Sookmyung and Sydney began last year with the celebration of the 50thanniversary of Korea-Australia Diplomatic Ties. The exhibition, held in Sydney last July under the sponsorship of both countries and their embassies, saw seven professors and doctorate and master’s degree students participating. On November 6 of that same year, a professor from Sydney held another exhibition, this time in Sookmyung. Thanks to the fine foundation laid last year, undergraduate students now have the chance to attend regular curriculum classes at the University of Sydney.

Dean Hwang mentioned that “students could stay and study at the University of Sydney without additional tuition or lodging costs since Sydney provided accommodations and didn’t impose extra fees. This is a good precedent of desirable exchange programs. Next year, we plan to lengthen the period of stay and focus on exchange programs for doctorate and master degree students.”
