Sookmyung Women's University Museum holds a special exhibition “An Era in Bloom, Flowers”

With the selection of Sookmyung Women＇s University Museum for the “2021 University Museum Promotion Support Project” hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and supervised by The Korean Association of University Museums, it is to hold the special exhibition “An Era in Bloom, Flowers” until September 30 (Thu).
The exhibition, which is held under the theme of “From Tradition to Modern Times Recognized by Plum Blossoms, Mugunghwa, and Apricot Blossoms,” reflects the current aspect of the rapid transition to the untact era and the 4th industrial revolution era due to the COVID-19 crisis. The special feature of this exhibition is to re-examine the history of “enlightenment” from tradition to modern times through the Korean word “gaehwa (blooming, enlightened),” which is in the title of the exhibition, by interpreting the dual meaning of the word.
In addition, the world of art will unfold centered on three flowers that symbolize the modern era. About 80 works of art, including portraits, photos, and attire of the royal family of the Korean Empire, beautifully decorated with plum blossoms and mugunghwa, and artifacts with apricot blossoms are to be on display.
Through the works, one can reflect on the meaning of flowers that have taken root in the unconscious of individuals and groups as well as the meaning of the flowering of modern civilization. You can enjoy the transformation into the modern era in harmony with beautiful flowers such as plum blossoms, the flower of the royal family, mugunghwa, the national flower, and apricot blossoms, the flower that marks the beginning of women＇s education and the edification flower of Sookmyung Women＇s University.
In particular, the “second-class Chik-im Gwan(High-ranking official directly appointed by the King)’s ceremonial robe,” unveiled for the first time in this exhibition, is a robe wore by official audiences to the emperor and for participating in royal banquets. Mugunghwa, a symbol of the Korean Empire, is adorned on the ceremonial robe and hat, and is evaluated as a symbol of transformation and independence.
The special exhibition is available at Sookmyung Women＇s University Museum from 10 am to 5 pm on weekdays during the period. If you make a reservation in advance through the museum, you can use the exhibition commentary service of the “Sookmyung Cultural Volunteers,” a docent made up of Sookmyung Women＇s University students.
