Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities of Sookmyung Women’s University participated with the Yongsan Cultural Center in a commentary program for the Yongsan Park’s partially open site, which is organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The partially open site of Yongsan Park is the former U.S. Army Officer's Residence Complex 5, where the Seobinggo, which stored ice during the Joseon Dynasty, was located. After liberation, a U.S. military camp was established, and after that, the Korea Land & Housing Corporation built accommodations and leased them to U.S. military officers. It was first opened to the public in August after the government remodeled some facilities. Yongsan-gu started a tour program for Koreans from November 10th.

The Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities has been recognized for the achievements of the Yongsan’s local content business, and participated in this Yongsan Park’s partial open site commentary program. A total of three people, including two interns from the research institute and one student from the Department of History & Culture, are to conduct a tour with a professional commentator from the Yongsan Cultural Center.

From November 10, 2020, they are to give detailed explanations to visitors every Tuesday-Saturday at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm on the main facilities on the site, the history of Yongsan and Yongsan bases, and plans to recreate the Yongsan Park, which will be transformed into a national park in the future.

In addition to the commentary program, the Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities will operate open civic lectures in line with the historical characteristics and location of the Yongsan Park. The first lecture is under the theme, “Yongsan Eighth US Army Show and Korean Popular Music,” a two hour lecture held five times starting at 11:30 am from November 7th to December 12th.

The Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities aims to popularize the humanities studies and cultivate local experts, having the regional cooperation research center and the Gonggam humanities center as its official affiliate organizations. The research institute officials said, “In the future, we will strengthen cooperation with 7 local governments including the Yongsan-gu Office and Yongsan Cultural Center to solidify our role as a platform for disseminating research results to local residents.” They also emphasized that “In line with the demands of the times, which expect universities to play an innovative role in providing channels of communication with the local communities, we intend to become a hub for the production of local experts by activating the development of curricular and non-curricular programs toward development of regional cooperation and problem solving, and by operating an industry-academia consultative group.”
