On November 19, Sookmyung Women’s University’s Group leading Universities with innovation and Seoul National University's Future Mobility Technology Center (FMTC) signed an MOU to strengthen cooperation in smart mobility research and education that combines autonomous vehicles and healthcare systems at the Seoul National University’s FMTC.

This MOU is expected to greatly contribute to fostering talents through reinforcement of research cooperation and credit exchange, such as technological R&D between the two institutions on overall smart mobility, including autonomous driving, electric vehicles, and healthcare systems, and creation of an ecosystem in related fields.

Sookmyung Women's University, which built the foundation to participate in the core industries of the 4th industrial revolution with the establishment of the College of Engineering in 2015, will be the first women’s university in Korea to participate in the ecosystem that creates a future smart mobility urban environment based on autonomous vehicles through this MOU.

In the future, Sookmyung Women's University will conduct research and educational cooperation activities using the 20,000 pyeong-scale autonomous driving test center built in the FMTC of Seoul National University. In addition, the two organizations are to create the most practical smart mobility research and education cooperation system in the nation by conducting joint research in various fields such as the creation of a future mobility demonstration complex based on autonomous vehicles and electric vehicles to create an ecosystem in the autonomous vehicle field, accumulation and analysis of autonomous driving data, combination of healthcare systems, and mobility services.

Myeong-seok Lee, Dean of Research & Business Development Foundation, who is in charge of the Group leading Universities with innovation, said, “It is of the greatest significance to establish a foundation for practical education and research on autonomous vehicles for the first time in Korea with FMTC,” and “through this MOU, we will share the resources and research achievements established by Sookmyung Women's University and Seoul National University's FMTC, and strengthen cooperation in all areas of electric vehicle-based smart mobility, including self-driving cars.”

Seoul National University FMTC Center Director Kyeong-soo Lee said, “The Future Mobility Technology Center is striving to create a related ecosystem through various studies that can apply autonomous vehicle research to real life,” and “through this MOU, we look forward to establishing a close mutual cooperation system with Sookmyung Women's University, which is one of the universities leading the autonomous driving field and possesses the most advanced technology as a women's university, and cooperating jointly for human resource training and R&D.”

Meanwhile, Sookmyung Women's University aims to set the “future vehicles (smart mobility)” as a new industry field and cultivate female engineers in the field of smart mobility, focusing on a track based on a specialized curriculum that combines autonomous vehicles and health care systems. The Seoul National University’s FMTC was completed in June 2020 to build a future smart mobility urban environment ecosystem based on autonomous vehicles on the 200,000 pyeong site of Siheung Campus.
