The Research Institute of Asian Women successfully finishes high school-university summer program

Sookmyung Women’s University’s the Research Institute of Asian Women (Director Minsun Chang) successfully concluded the summer vacation program of the “2020 Seoul High School-University Local Human Resource Development Project,” which targeted high school students in Yongsan-gu, Eunpyeong-gu, and Gangseo-gu.
Seoul High School-University Local Human Resource Development Project is a project that utilizes the excellent human and material resources of universities to provide customized training programs for high school students in the area to provide career experience and develop conformity to majors.

With the start of mock interviews and consulting of around 60 outstanding instructors in June, The Research Institute of Asian Women of Sookmyung Women’s University conducted lectures and hands-on programs in diverse areas such as humanities, social science, natural science, free exploration, career, and college admission. The program was conducted at 7 schools in the area of 3 districts, which included Eunpyeong-gu’s Sunil Girls’High School, Yale Girls’ High School, Soongsil High School, Shindo High School; Ganseo-gu’s Kyungbok Girls' High School, Deokwon Girls’ High School; and Yongsan-gu’s Sacred Heart Girls' High School.
The detailed program included “Creative Science Experience Camp (1. Future of nano 2. Quantitative analysis using uv/vis-absorbing spectroscope 3. Fruit battery experiment), “The world of statistics with engineering tools,” “Architecture tour,” “Design meets technology,” “SW algorithm camp using python,” “Humanoid robot control,” “Creative makers using 3D printing,” “World of coding using Arduino,” “Mock interviews and admission consulting,” etc. Up to 25 students enrolled per program, and a total of more than 200 students from each school participated and showed enthusiasm for their major and career experience.

Student Yeon-su Lee (Sunil Girls’ High School) who attended the “Design meets technology” program expressed her satisfaction with the course and said, “By combining design with electronic circuits that I always thought was too complicated and difficult, it became a great opportunity to see the fun side of electronic circuits.” Student In-seok Gil (Soongsil High School) who participated in the “Fruit battery experiment” showed his interest and enthusiasm for the program and said, “In addition to what I learned at school, I was able to learn new things through experimentation, and it was really exciting to see current and voltage using fruits.”

Especially in the case of this year, as the spread of COVID-19 caused frequent changes and postponement of high school academic schedules, there were many changes in the project’s programs and schedules as well. “Although there were difficulties due to the external environment, we were able to successfully finish the summer vacation program through adhering to social distancing policies, such as wearing masks mandatory and taking no more than 20 students per classroom,” the officials of The Research Institute of Asian Women said.
The Research Institute of Asian Women plans to continue the high school-university local human resource development program for high school students in the second semester in the efforts to narrow the educational gap between regions and create a win-win university for the community.
