The Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center holds a joint seminar for UNESCO-UNITWIN 2020

On November 12, as part of the “2020 Sookmyung Women's University UNESCO-UNITWIN ICT and Leadership Education Program for Women's Empowerment,” Sookmyung Women's University’s the Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center, a chaired organization of UNESCO, held a seminar with the National Assembly Education Committee members and the Korean UNESCO-UNITWIN supervising universities, which include Handong Global University, Korea National Open University, and Korea National University of Education.
Under the theme “Innovation and Future of Higher Education in the Post-COVID-19 Era: Through UNESCO UNITWIN Educational Cooperation,” this seminar was participated by more than 35 people on and offline, which included Chairman Gi-hong Yu (The Minjoo Party of Korea), Rep. Byeong-wuk Kim (The People Power Party), Director of International Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Education, Eun-hee Choi, Secretary General Gyeong-ryeong Park, President of Handong Global University Soon-heung Chang, Sookmyung Women’s University’s President Yunkeum Chang and Dean of International Affairs Office Gieun Chung, as well as government, education, and project officials from Korea and developing countries.
Participants shared the project contents of the UNITWIN-hosting universities and discussed an innovative educational cooperation model in preparation for the post-COVID-19 era. Through this, it was an opportunity to explore ways and directions for cooperation between governments and universities in developing countries, and to discuss the role of higher education and the advancement of developing countries.
In addition, Education Committee Chairman Gi-hong Yu of The Minjoo Party of Korea said, “We hope to overcome the crisis of higher education through UNITWIN activities,” and strongly sympathized with the need for stable financial support toward higher education in this era of the 4th industrial revolution and the COVID-19 era.
President Yunkeum Chang emphasized the effectiveness of the UNESCO-UNITWIN project at Sookmyung Women's University by addressing the role and necessity of female leaders in the field of information and communication technology (ICT), in particular, to foster female leaders who will be active in various fields in the new-normal era.
Jung-in Jo, Executive Director of The Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center, suggested flipped learning as an innovative educational method in the post-COVID-19 era, saying, “After taking online platform lectures, learners are given in-depth discussions and high-quality Q&A through real-time lectures. They can reinforce their self-directed learning ability and avoid the unilateral teaching method of instructors.”
Houngphet Chanthavong, Vice President of the National University of Laos, who has participated in the UNESCO-UNITWIN project of Sookmyung Women's University since 2018, praised the project by saying “UNESCO-UNITWIN project is a program that provides innovation in ICT and leadership education to female students,” and also requested that the program be expanded to female faculty members.
The UNESCO-UNITWIN project is a project that promotes knowledge sharing and cooperation among universities around the world in order to strengthen the capacity of higher education institutions. 44 UNITWIN networks in 22 countries are active, and Sookmyung Women's University is conducting various activities in cooperation with 16 universities in 9 countries under the theme “ICT and Leadership Education Program for Women's Empowerment.”
