Thankfully, to solve this worry, the Sookmyung Library held library tour programs just for freshmen students. The programs, named ‘Freshmen, meeting the Hot and Library’, and ‘Freshmen; immersed in Library’, were held until March 18th. As students participate in each program and earn a stamp after the participation, students get a chance to explore the facility and get used to the usage of library system. The Sookmyung correspondents took participation in this program on behalf of freshmen students who are not accustomed to our library system. If you wish to know an efficient way of using Sookmyung Library, you surely shouldn’t miss this article!

Shin-Han Lobby filled with natural light and World Woman literature Center

Stepping into the first floor of our library, the first sight you see is Shin-han Lobby with a wide window and a clear, extensive outside view, as well as circulation course reserve, online public access catalogs and World Woman Literature Center. Circulation course reserve has all reference books recommended by the university, and students can easily borrow books from this reserve. Near the reserve is the World Woman Literature Center which uniquely has a gallery. In this center we can see nameplates of Korea’s renowned female literary writers, as well as literary related exhibition which change from time to time. Just outside of the center, you can see an ‘online public access catalogs’ on your left. You can easily look for data from this desk. You can get an SMS about the location of the data you’re looking for, so you can have easy accesses to the needed material without taking notes.

Is library a place for merely reading? DICA Plaza and Filming Archive!

Situated on the second floor, there is a center called ‘DICA Plaza’ where you can freely use computers. This is the place where students usually visit to print their reading materials or to use a computer. There’s also ‘Eun-Won Hong Film Archive’ which screen movies periodically. Students with spare time between classes can come upstairs to borrow a DVD and enjoy their watch in DICA Plaza, or visit the film archive to watch a movie.

Collections Rooms filled with various books

On the third and fourth floor are collections rooms filled with data and study room for 1 or 2 people. Our university currently own over one million books, various serial publications, and most of them are located in 3rd and 4th floor. Not only are there collections rooms but also study rooms. In order to use a study room you have to make an appointment through ‘group study room appointment menu’ by simply logging in the library homepage and click on the ‘seat/facility appointment’ banner.

Using self-check system placed in third floor, you can also borrow books without bothering to go to the first floor.

Additionally, many freshmen hesitate to use an open space on 3rd or 4th floor, but feel free to use the space to read books or study whenever there is a space available.

Complex Learning Cultural space, where creativity and cooperation thrive

Located on the 5th floor, there’s a place where students can have their meals named ‘café 休’.(pronounced as café Hue) As there is both café and cafeteria, students in the library can freely appease their hunger whenever they feel hungry.

When the weather is nice, enjoying warm sunshine at terrace is also recommended.

In the C.C Plaza, situated next to 休, you can find imagination booth; where the cozy spacing gives you strong impression, an outdoor studying area ‘thinking floor’, and group study room. These places can be useful for the students who are engaged in group projects.

To give a piece of advice, you’re allowed to use the ‘thinking floor’ and study rooms by booking through the library website. The “Thinking floor”, which is decorated similar to a terrace, has house-shaped seats, and 4 to 6 students can gather around to have conversations. If you cannot concentrate while you’re studying, the ‘Thinking Floor’ is surely a good place to refresh your mind while you feel the cool breeze.

Annexe ‘A’ Building- ‘A’ intensive study room

Besides the main library building, there is another building across the main library which has an underground intensive study room and a book storage facility.

Underground intensive study room is commonly called as ‘A’ intensive study room, while it is broadly known as ‘Dungeon’ among students. It is so called because of its location and its atmospheric resemblance to labyrinth. Just like ‘S’ study room it is operating 24/7 and has various study rooms.

Moreover, there are lockers situated on the ‘A’ and ‘B’ floor of this building. With registration for library locker and 15,000 won, students are available to use for one semester. Students can request the usage by logging in the library website and click on the banner ‘seat/facility appointment’.

By participating in the library tours, we could explore the various facilities and usage of Sookmyung Library system. Our university is still filled with something new and complicated which are even unaccustomed to students who’ve been to this school for several years, so it is needless to say how difficult for freshmen might be. This is the reason why the library tour programs could be very useful.

Though the programs are already finished on March 18th, you can call to academic information service team and inquire about the usage of library service or facilities whenever you need. You will be kindly guided at anytime. (service@sm.ac.kr/710-9210)
