Women’s Laboratory Venture Innovation Group awarded the Special Prize at the “Lab Start-Up 2020”

Sookmyung Women’s University’s “Team Lim (Team of Professor Ho-seon Lim from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering), a creative team of Women’s Laboratory Venture Innovation Group, won the Special Prize at the “Lab Start-Up 2020” in the laboratory startup team’s excellence exhibition category (Sookmyung Women's University President’s Award, 1 million won in prize money).
The “Lab Start-Up 2020,” sponsored by the Ministry of Science and ICT and hosted by the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Korea Entrepreneurship Foundation, was held at Dongdaemun DDP Art Hall #2 on January 21 (Tue.). The event consisted of IR pitching by laboratory startup companies, progress competition, and exhibition and competition of excellent senior entrepreneurship teams.
The event which was held to expand the lab start-up culture by sharing business performance and providing investment opportunities for lab start-up companies, was attended by more than 800 people from universities, venture capitals, accelerators, and start-up companies. Among them, Sookmyung Women’s University’s Creative Team “Team Lim” took the glory of the Special Prize in the laboratory entrepreneurship team excellence exhibition category.
The representative of Lim's team said, “We are honored to receive such a great unexpected prize” and “We are very happy to have a chance to grow and start a business with our laboratory research achievements that was made possible based on start-up basics and practical training provided through the I-Corps Laboratory Venture Innovation Group.”
Meanwhile, Sookmyung Women’s University has been supporting engineering entrepreneurship education and start-up activities to women start-up teams to spread women-led engineering ventures as a women-specific laboratory entrepreneurship innovation team for the public science & technology entrepreneurship search project (hereinafter referred to as the “I-Corps Project”) launched by the Ministry of Science and ICT in 2019.
Major activities included market-based entrepreneurship training in Korea and abroad (U.S.), and various activities such as interviews to discover customers and prototype production using the Lean Startup methodology/mentoring and U.S. NSF I-Corps programs.
Major achievements include the Encouragement Prize at the K-Startup 2019 Finals (Minister of SMEs and Startups Award) in the preliminary exploration league category, selection as one of the 300 Promising Student Venture Teams in 2019 (Sookmyung Women's University’s Dagong Innovators (다공혁신가) - Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering Professor Gyeong-min Choi’s Team), and hosting of the 2019 SMU-Mini I-Corps Program (13 teams in total) based on the educational achievements by the preliminary exploration team of the 2020 I-Corps women’s laboratory entrepreneurship.
In the future, the university plans to hold a “Sookmyung Women's University I-Corps Project Briefing” for preliminary startup teams in early March 2020 to recruit women’s laboratory entrepreneurship teams for the 2020 I-Corps Project. The training of the entrepreneurship team is expected to commence in May.
Sookmyung Women’s University’s entrepreneurship Engagement Foundation and Research & Business Development Foundation, which are in charge of this project, announced their aspirations for 2020 and said, “We will play a leading role in establishing a women's technology entrepreneurship ecosystem through various entrepreneurship education and technology consulting, and as a women’s laboratory venture innovation group, we also plan to actively support the start-up exploration activities of the Women’s University Lab Start-up Team, located in Seoul, through diverse programs.”
