As a university leading the Korean industry-university cooperation, Sookmyung Women’s University is on a roll. Although our school started out as a latecomer to technology transfer, we are creating a successful technology transfer model with original strategies. Let’s take a look at our university’s journey through the remarkable achievements in the field of industry-university cooperation in such a short period.
A win-win relationship between industry, academia, and research
The win-win relationship between universities and corporations is advancing through the link of technology transfer. Industry-academia cooperation is an important key to achieving community development through mutual development of universities and corporations. As the industrial structure is rapidly changing and the necessity for linkage between industry, academia, and research is continuously increasing, the government decided to amend the Promotion of Industrial Education and Industry-Academic Cooperation Act as early as this year to ease various regulations with the aims to promote the commercialization of university’s technologies.
“The only university” among women's universities to be selected for the “BRIDGE” project
In 2018, our university was selected as the only women’s university in Korea for the “Beyond Research Innovation and Development for Good Enterprises (BRIDGE+)” project sponsored by the Ministry of Education. As our university was selected for the project, it became possible to receive stable support such as verifying university technologies desired by industries and making prototypes. Recently, we were selected as a dedicated institution for the “laboratory entrepreneurship innovation group for women” conducted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and has been providing entrepreneurship education and support. As with the BRIDGE+ project, our school is the only women’s university to be selected. We plan to focus on revitalizing laboratory start-ups by committing approximately 1.6 billion won in operating expenses over two years.
What was the key to becoming a leading university in Korean industry-university cooperation in such a short period?
Sookmyung Women’s University has leaped to become a leading university in domestic industry-university cooperation. In the 2019 JoongAng Ilbo University Evaluation, our university displayed great prowess by ranking third in the amount of technology transfer income per faculty member of science and technology in the faculty research category.
What was the key to our university's ability to achieve great growth in such a short period? As we were latecomers in the field of technology transfer, our university started out with an original strategy. First, the school established the Center for Technology Licensing and recruited specialized personnel. The Office of Technology Licensing devised a strategy and moved proactively. By focusing on the needs of industries, we committed to matching the right professors with companies in the relevant fields. Thanks to this, efficient and large-scale technology transfer was possible.
Universities have a number of creative assets, that is, skills. Companies can use this to create better products, and colleges can generate profits other than tuition to achieve self-reliance. While the importance of industry-academia cooperation is growing, we look forward to seeing what unique technical commercialization success model lies ahead for Sookmyung Women's University.
