First school company “Sookmyung i” selected for ‘2015 School Company Support Business

The school company support business started in 2004 to develop school companies and encourage training of human resources appropriate for the field, activation of industry-academic cooperation, and creation of financial profit for schools. Our university was selected as a new type of company for this business, and will receive 1.1 billion won of financial support from the government over the next five years.


Dean of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, Eui-yong Lee, said, “Our university started a school company that simultaneously pursues major-based field experience and a profitable business last year, and has focused on industry-academic cooperation,” and analyzed, “I think we were selected because we were highly evaluated for our unique items, educational effects, profitable aspects, and contribution to activation of related industries.”

“Sookmyung i” is an industry education organization under the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation. It was selected through a campus competition for a school company in 2014, started business preparations in September, and opened the official website in March, 2015 (http://www.sookmyungi.kr).


The main business of the company is production of 1:1 customized pattern products by expert textile designers, based on the pictures of customers. The first commercial product, the I Backpack, was a model that applied pictures drawn by children to a bag. It was received well, as it applied the emotions and ideas of children, and was judged to aid improvement of creativity and confidence in consumers. In addition, the company plans to expand its fields of business to fashion products, stationery, and other daily life products.

“Sookmyung i” also plans to provide duty education through field experience and a one-man business incubating system for entrepreneurs in training, to aid development of a mind of entrepreneurship. Twenty students from different majors, including the Department of Craft, Department of Education, Department of PR and Advertising, Department of Law, and Department of Children’s Welfare have participated in the field experience, and two of these students succeeded in early employment to a fiber design company in recognition of their work experience. Professor Kyung-ah Kim of the Department of Arts & Craft, who is the Director of “Sookmyung i” revealed, “I plan to develop it into a dynamic company with expertise, fitting of the honor of being the first school company of Sookmyung.”
