Soonhun Dance Group wins Grand Prix award at International Folk Dance Festival in Romania

Professor Soo-jung Cha and the students of the dance group participated in the International Folk Dance Festival in Romania, ‘CARPATI 2015,’ and won the first prize award.
Dance groups from ten countries, including France, China, Turkey, Joreujia, and Lithuania took part in the event, which is a folk dance festival and competition with international prestige. The Soonhun Dance Group’s performance at the festival instantly caught the eye of the audience and judges. CARPATI Festival Committee Head Catalin Oancea said, “The dance of the Soonhun Dance Group expresses the beauty of Korea in a three-dimensional and fresh way unlike other dances I have seen. They seemed like dancers from another planet.”
As Professor Cha accepted the award, she said, “It is a meaningful thing for us as Sookmyung members to accept this Grand Prix for Korean dance at an international event this year, as we celebrate 70 years of liberation.” The 2 million won they received as part of their Grand Prix will be donated fully to the school.
Soonhun Dance Group was created in 2005 by the Korean dance part of our Department of Dance. It is an artistic group that creates new Korean dance based on our traditional culture. The group is continuously working hard to continue the intentions of a leader in new women’s education and the founder of our university, Soonhun Hwanggwibi, and create a space of true culture and art fitting of the 21st century.
