Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities holds <2019 Humanities Week> with Yongsan District

Sookmyung’s Research Institute of Humanities held the "2019 Humanities Week" event from October 28 to November 2 under the theme "Beyond Conflict, and to reconciliation and co-prosperity." with the Yongsan District Office. The Humanities Week was held under the motto of overcoming conflicts through humanities and moving on to the path of reconciliation and co-prosperity.
The Humanities Week is a project that the Ministry of Education has been promoting since 2006 to popularize humanities and is annually held on the last week of October, hosting a humanities festival in many cities across the country. The Research Institute of Humanities has been participating in the humanities city project since it was selected in 2017 under the theme of “Living together with the patterns carved on the site, Yongsan, a city of Humanities." This year, a total of 39 humanities city business groups from across the country were on hand.
The Humanities Week was held for a week, starting with a welcoming speech and opening announcement by In Chan Park, director of the Research Institute of Humanities. On the day of the opening ceremony, there were lectures under the themes of "Statue of Peace and Aichi Triennale," and “Yongsan's Traditional Culture, and Yongsan's Foreign Culture."
During the week, lectures concerning four topics, ‘Reconciliation and Coexistence in Movies’, ‘Beyond the Hate Society’, ‘100th Anniversary of the March 1st Movement-Yongsan’s Independence Activists’, and ‘Little Tokyo, East Ichon-dong’, were held. Also, three humanities experience activities such as ‘Walking Yongsan’s Independence Road’, ‘Finding Yongsan’s Exotic Colors’, and ‘Why We Need to Know History? Walking Namsan’s Historical Scenes’ as well as diverse programs like ‘Namsan Flavor Festival’ took place.
On the last day of the Humanities week, a symposium was held under the topic of . It was a meaningful time with humanities scholars, civilian experts, local young adults, and Sookmyung constituents gathering to observe the topic’s current situation and looking for future paths to take.
Participants noted that they felt a sense of achievement amidst their busy lives, thinking about the local community from a humanistic viewpoint and noticing Yongsan’s colors due to Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities’ Humanities Week.
Head of Institute In Chan Park expressed his surprise and appreciation not only for the attention from the outside but for the participation of Yongsan residents, stating, “Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities will continue to serve the role of sharing accumulated research at the university to the residents of Yongsan.”
