Our university started remodeling the Main Library in July, last year, to improve old facilities and reflect continuous complaints of students. The 5th and 6th floor of the Main Library, and B2 and the restrooms of the annex building were renewed. The spaces were changed into user-friendly spaces considering the identity of our university as a place for global women leaders, and the comprehensive demands of students.

Creation of a pleasant reading room environment

The spaces that changed the most after remodeling are the 5th and 6th floors. The previous B reading room (B2 of the annex building) was moved to the 6th floor, and the spaces were reorganized for each use for academic efficiency and creation of a pleasant environment. In addition, new equipment considering safety and record maintenance were provided for the 24-hour operation of the reading rooms in the B1 floor of the annex room and 6th floor of the Main Library.

Environment-friendly birch was used for the new furniture on the 5th and 6th floors, and lamps appropriate for the atmosphere of each reading room were installed on the 6th floor for academic efficiency and comfort. The reading rooms are divided into concentration reading rooms, general reading rooms and laptop reading rooms, so students can choose a room according to use. There is also a ‘rest’ space with high sofas for breaks and improved concentration. Now Sookmyung women can study 365 days a year in a pleasant and comfortable environment, in reading rooms with excellent views of Mount Namsan.

CC Plaza, a space of creativity and cooperation

CC Plaza (Creativity & Collaboration Plaza) on the 5th floor is the name that was selected based on a two-step process. First, two names were selected through a naming contest for the new space, along with ‘Collaboration Zone,’ and second, a preference survey was conducted. 420 out of 531 respondents chose the final name.

CC Plaza is a user customized creativity and cooperation space, and consists of the Imagination Lounge, Imagination Booth (house-shaped), a group study room and an education room. The Imagination Booth and group study room can be used after pre-registration through the library website.

The theme library corner includes books for investigating the culture and history of various countries, such as books on travel and employment, through which students can read, think, be creative and imagine to cooperate in the space of infinite imagination. This space includes smart TVs, mini-beams and tablets necessary for working together, to aid creative thinking and team problem-solving.

'Saengak Maru' and 'Cafe Hyu'

The rooftop garden next to the lowered window-seats of CC Plaza, Saengak Maru, is an outdoor space where you can see Mount Namsan to the east, Mount Gwanak to the south, and Mount Bukhan to the north. It will become a space of healing, and thinking and reading in nature for Sookmyung members.

When you come out of CC Plaza, there is Cafe Hyu, which has a new cafeteria function added to the existing restaurant. Cafe Hyu is a place that combines design with a pleasant place of rest and comfortable reading, making the library “a cafe-like library.”

Thus, the 5th floor of the library is a comprehensive academic and cultural space with various functions including creativity, imagination, cooperation, education, reading, studying, meeting, communication and discussions, and will become a place where people “want to go and stay.”
