Four institutions and organizations including the Ministry of Education, National Police Agency, Korean Council for University Education, Korean Council for University College Education signed the ‘Business agreement on the Safety of the Single-Person Household Concentrated Area in and around Campus’ at Sookmyung Administration Building. They also formed a consultative group for the university’s security and expect to activate the joint operations of crime prevention, joint promoting Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), and strengthen patrol operations inside and around campus.

In particular, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a way of preventing crimes by installing CCTVs and street lamps. As an example, there are ‘Safe Roads for Women’ around the 1st and 2nd Foundation Campus of Sookmyung Women’s University.

Eun-Hae Yoo, Deputy Prime Minister of Ministry of Education, who visited Sookmyung Women’s University for the agreement ceremony commented, “Universities are a place for learning and haven for academics that should be protected by the society. I expect to have an overall diagnosis and see improvements in the crime prevention level of universities across the nation.”

After the agreement ceremony, Eun-Hae Yoo, Deputy Prime Minister; Gap-Ryong Min, Commissioner General of Korean National Police Agency (KNPA); Jun-Seong Hwang, Vice President of Korean Council for University Education; Go-Woo Lee, President of Korean Council for University College Education; and Jung-Ai Kang, President of Sookmyung Women’s University patrolled the campus to check safety facilities. For this event, executives of Sookmyung Association of Clubs and student safety patrol from other universities participated as well.

The joint patrol started from the 1st Foundation Campus of Sookmyung Women’s University passing the 2nd Foundation Campus and went through the area concentrated with single-person households. Participants learned how the emergency safety bell works by pushing it themselves and looked around the gobo light (a device that shows messages on the wall of a building or on the ground by projecting light through an image glass) installed in unsafe areas. From these kinds of activities, they showed deep interest on the school’s security measure. Furthermore, participants strengthened their will on preventing crime by patrolling the ‘Safe Roads for Women’ that starts from the Main Library’s back gate to Shinkwang Girls’ Middle School.

President Kang said, “Sookmyung Women’s University will cooperate with organizations such as Seoul Yongsan Police Station and Yongsan-gu office to create an environment where students can concentrate on studying without having concerns about safety.”
