"Explore Sookmyung" Sookmyung Women’s University Holds '2018 Open Campus'

On September 1st, Sookmyung Women’s University (SMU) held the “2018 Sookmyung Open Campus” where students interested in SMU could experience and learn about majors and careers that they were curious about.

 

As part of the Ministry of Education’s high school education contributing university support business, the Open Campus, conducted by the Office of Admissions Management, was arranged to provide an opportunity for students who are concerned about their future to explore paths that are appropriate for them by participating in special lectures by professors counseling about majors with currently attending students engineering experience special lecture for school entrance and more. A total of around 1,000 students, including those who applied in advance, participated in the event.


 

 

Kim Tae Yeon, a sophomore at Sokcho Girls' High School, who participated in the Open Campus said, "I applied so I could decide on a career by listening to the introductions of various departments and get motivation to prepare for my university enrollment”.



 


 

Counseling booths according to majors were set in the Multicomplex Hall. High school students and parents visiting from all parts of the country filled a space the size of a basketball court. Among majors from the college of engineering, students from the Division of ICT Convergence Engineering and Department of Applied Physics booth were interviewed. The student said, “students who come here to get counseling often ask questions about what to write in the personal statement required for university entrance. Students most frequently ask about interview questions.” She added, “It is also helpful to hear first-hand experiences through counseling booths and learn specific ways to prepare because it is difficult to obtain practical information only from booklets".

 


 


 


 

After a special lecture on writing personal statements, the participants moved from the Grand Hall in Sunheon Building to Myungshin Building. 22 departments processed the seminar for explaining each major. Many students perked up their ears and eagerly listened to what the professor had to say. The students also made notes on the seminar and asked additional questions about the information they were curious about. After listening to a seminar given by Professor Jeon Sae Jae of the English Department, a student said that she learned more about the job fields the professor recommended. She also mentioned that, despite the fact that many schools have an English department, they all have differences. She was able to acknowledge more about what to learn at the English Department at Sookmyung Women’s University and how to plan out her future.

Heo Ji Eun, the president of Polaris (Law Major, ’16) volunteered as the Open Campus staff. She stated, “I hope it would be a good opportunity for the students to think more seriously about their future and also about Sookmyung by receiving 1:1 major counseling from senior students and attending lectures by professors.”
