Sookmyung University holds 113th anniversary ceremony

On May 21, our university held the “113th Sookmyung Anniversary Ceremony” at the Second Foundation Campus’ Noonggot Square Hall(underdetermined).
This event was prepared to look back on our history from our start as the Myungshin Girl's School founded by the Royal Family of the Korean Empire in 1906 to becoming the cradle of Korean women’s education, as well as renewing our determination toward a new beginning in celebration of the 113th anniversary. The tape cutting ceremony for the completion of the PRIME Center in March also took place prior to the main ceremony.
In addition to the directors of the incorporated school Sookmyung Educational Foundation, our university’s professors, staffs, students, and alumni, the ceremony was attended by more than 300 distinguished guests, which included the Representative of Future Forest (former Ambassador of Korea to China) Kwon Byeong-hyeon, Head of Yongsan District Office Jang-hyeon Sung, among others. The ceremony that kicked off with the history report from the Director of Strategy & Planning Jung-san Oh was followed by the congratulatory messages from the Chairman of Sookmyung Educational Foundation Seung-han Lee (read by Director Eun-gi Yoon), the Head of Yongsan District Office Jang-hyeon Sung, the Representative of Future Forest Byeong-hyeon Kwon, commemorative message from the president, and commendation.
In his congratulatory message, Chairman Seung-han Lee said, “The achievements of Sookmyung members during the long history of 113 years are the living proof of steadfast conviction and philosophy,” and “I hope all the Sookmyung members can join hands in mind and spirit to become the leaders of the changing times.”
Head of District Office Jang-hyeon Sung expressed his expectations and said, “Currently, there are scholarship students from Qui Nhon City, Vietnam, which has sisterhood relationship with Yongsan District, attending the Sookmyung Women's University,” and “After they graduate from the global education of Sookmyung, they will be able to develop into the bridge between the two countries.” Representative Byeong-hyeon Kwon, the representative of Future Forest which is an NGO that conducts activities such as planting trees to prevent desertification, gave an introduction with “The GPS (Green Promise of Sookmyung) that was formed by Sookmyung students last year is an autonomous green volunteer group that exactly coincides with the ideologies of global citizenship education and sustainable development education declared by UNESCO.” He continued and said, “I believe many universities will follow Sookmyung’s initiatives to save our planet.”
Giving her commemorative message in a presentation format, President Jungai Kang said, “In a situation where university innovation is being emphasized at home and abroad, Sookmyung Women's University has achieved various meaningful results in the education, research, financial affairs, and system areas,” and mentioned the selection of various government-supported projects, including the Ministry of Education’s PRIME project, and the winning of the school land suit with Korea Asset Management Corporation, etc.
Subsequently, President Kang explained “After the basic college competency evaluation, Sookmyung has been elevating its development plan under the vision of ‘Global Sookmyung’s Future Value.’” She then presented the following specific educational goals: ▲ prestigious women’s private school that implements students’ happiness and growth, ▲ innovative university that leads future technologies based on specialized convergence research, and ▲ a win-win university that implements a new industry-academic collaboration mechanism.
Finally, President Kang concluded her commemorative message with “Sookmyung is a university of the people and the fruition of not only one body, but based on the blood and sweat of all members over the past history of 113 years,” and “We will continue our efforts toward a sustainable Sookmyung Women's University by succeeding such traditions. We believe in the unfailing strength of the Sookmyung family.”
The ceremony included government citation and long-term employment citation, as well as awarding teaching staff with excellent teaching performance evaluation, class evaluation, and industry-academic cooperation. In addition, the citation of excellent employee and student, including the employee of the year, were awarded at the ceremony. The Future Forest Representative Award, which is a citation of student excellence, went to the GPS, an environmental campaign club of Sookmyung Women's University.
