Sookmyung Women’s University is constantly striving to expand and develop the base of humanities, and is actively developing and operating various convergence courses based on humanities in addition to reorganizing and supporting interdisciplinary programs related to convergence. Let’s take a closer look at the distinguished history, policy, direction, and potential vision of Sookmyung Women’s University’s humanities studies from a variety of perspectives.
Exploring the Tradition of Humanities Studies
The intelligence and competence of Sookmyung Women’s University's humanities have traditionally deepened and widened through the course of actively responding to the fate and flow of national history, and this very tradition of Sookmyung is related to the educational spirit of national movements and the realization of humanistic spirit.
Sookmyung Women’s University emphasized humanities as the school’s tradition since the foundation of the school. Since then, it has produced many excellent humanities scholars and literary figures, mainly from the College of Liberal Arts, and has faithfully played its role as a mecca for Korean humanities and women's education. In addition, Sookmyung Women’s University's education and research have traditionally emphasized culture based on humanities.
In 2016, with the establishment of the College of General Education and the establishment of a new integrated Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities as an Auxiliary Facility in the school, Sookmyung’s humanities studies has entered a new era of change and development. In addition, in 2017, the General Education Research Institute was established for the purpose of contributing to the development of education and the university in order to carry out research and related projects in the field of liberal arts education.
Fostering Human Resources Through Curricular and Extracurricular Programs
Our university has been operating the “Sookmyung Life Academy Program,” a program for nurturing the right talents in harmony with intellectual, moral, and physical education. Sookmyung Life Academy is a program run by the College of General Education and the General Education Research Institute with the goal of fostering future women leaders.
A representative extracurricular program of Sookmyung Women’s University, the “Sookmyung Debate Contest,” started in 2002. The contest is aimed at fostering women leaders with debate skills based on critical reflection and rational problem analysis.
Sookmyung Women’s University has been hosting successful “Sookmyung WIC Hackathon” in cooperation with Amazon Web Services (AWS) every year.
As a result of various efforts and challenges, Sookmyung Women’s University has been steadily achieving a number of awards through humanities students by winning a number of external competitions.
Innovation and Challenge in Humanities Education
The education of humanities at Sookmyung Women’s University has established a new turning point this year. Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities, which was established only 3 years ago, was selected for the “2020 Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) Project” that is offered by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
Accordingly, Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities is to receive approximately 8.4 billion won over the next 7 years in funding. With this, it plans to focus on the ever deepening hate issues in our society based on the theme of “The Age of Hatred, and Response by Humanities Studies.” Previously, the General Education Research Institute, affiliated to the Division of General Education, was selected for the humanities and social research institute support project of the National Research Foundation of Korea. With the support of 1.2 billion won for 6 years, the institute plans to develop curricular and extracurricular programs, build an online platform, and participate in K-MOOC, among others.

In addition, based on the development of best practices for capstone subjects and the results of operating programs per major in humanities and industry-academia cooperation, the Center for Teaching and Learning currently operates a variety of industry-academia-linked programs. The theory of human resource development program organized by the Division of Education is an excellent example of 2019 1st semester industry-academia-related subject.
Among the Interdisciplinary Programs for Undergraduates of Sookmyung Women’s University, which are actively being conducted compared to other universities, the Interdisciplinary Program for Narrative Writing and the Interdisciplinary Program for Humanities and Social Sciences continue to maintain middle and high ranks in student preferences. The Narrative Writing major especially has maintained its position in the top groups each year.
