Opening ceremony for the Digital Humanity Center, a digital convergence research and education center

On Tue, Sep. 12, Sookmyung held the opening ceremony for the Jang Bong Ae Digital Humanity Center. It is expected to be the center for digital convergence research and education at Sookmyung University.


The center located in the heart of the campus will become the core space to realize the vision put forth by President Jang Yoon-geum as the world’s best digital humanities university. It will develop a curriculum of creative vision through the convergence of humanities and digital technology and conduct interdisciplinary research.


The Digital Humanity Center is named after Jang Bong-ae, Honorary Director of the Daewoong Foundation, who greatly contributed to the development of her alma mater (Home Economics, Class of ‘57), such as donating 2 billion won for the center.


Director Jang said, “I decided to donate to support the spirit of digital humanities at Sookmyung Women’s University, which is at the forefront of cultivating new talent for the era of ‘new normal. This is significant because the vision is in line with the social contribution activities of the Daewoong Foundation that has taken the lead in creating a healthy society by cultivating global female leaders.”


More than 70 guests from academia and industry attended the ceremony, including President Jang Yoon-geum, Kim Yong-hwan Director of the Digital Humanity Center, and Honorary Director Jang Bong-ae.


KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung sent a congratulatory message, saying “It is the era where the importance of humanity is emphasized amid global trends of accelerating the 4th Industrial Revolution and digital transformation,” he said, adding, “I commend and applaud Sookmyung for the new challenge in which you are prepare for the future of the new normal through the convergence of humanities and digital technology.”


Sookmyung President Jang said, “The Digital Humanity Center could by no means have launched without the help of alumnae Jang Bong-ae. As a new space with new ideas, those at Sookmyung will chart a new path together by taking this opening ceremony as an opportunity.”

Meanwhile, KAIST Professor Maeng Seong-hyun gave a presentation on the topic of “Digital Humanities, Who Is It for?” at the academic symposium held prior to the ceremony.


Next, Yoon Seok-min, a team leader at Mcircle that operates WellCheck, a chronic disease management application, introduced the WellCheck Diet Program on which Sookmyung and Daewoong are collaborating. The Digital Humanity Center is operating a scientific health care program through medical big data research in collaboration with Daewoong.


Lastly, Professor Jeong Byeong-ho of Korea University, leader of the host university for the Talent Nurturing Project in Humanities and Social Sciences Convergence gave a presentation on the topic of the strategy for nurturing talents in convergence. Sookmyung University was selected as one among four other universities for the project. Following him, a panel discussion continued chaired by Professor Lee Jung-sik of the Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology at Seoul National University.


Kim Yong-hwan, Director of the Digital Humanity Center, said, “We intend to become a central institution that opens and operates convergence education programs in collaboration with domestic and international organizations and researchers. It will be used as a cradle for conducting innovative convergence research and nurturing talented individuals in the field.”
