In celebration of one of Korea’s most beloved holidays, Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day), Sookmyung Women’s University opened an experiential event to spread our Chuseok culture to international students.
Our university’s Office of International Affairs opened an experiential program introducing Korea’s traditional culture and holiday etiquette to around 50 international students and exchange students at Gemma Hall of The Second Foundation Campus on September 14 (Fri).
The students listened to a special lecture on topics such as the modern progress and culture of Korea for about an hour starting from 3:30 pm. After the lecture, the students had the chance to wear Korean traditional dress, hanbok, which was prepared in advance, and learned our bowing etiquette on holidays such as Chuseok and Lunar New Year’s Day from the lecturer as well as trying songpyeon (half-moon-shaped rice cake), yugwa (deep-fried sweet rice cake), sikhye (sweet rice drink), among others.
While some students were busy taking selfies, charmed by the colorful hanbok, all the students had the chance to enjoy the festive atmosphere by trying sweet snacks. Officials from the Office of International Affairs said, “We had the opportunity to share Korea’s traditional culture with the international students in celebration of the upcoming biggest holiday Hangawi (Korean Thanksgiving Day),” and “Based on such high satisfaction from the students, we plan to hold more diverse programs in the futures.”
