Soomyung Women’s University, founded by the Daehan Imperial family in 1906 as the nation’s first educational institution for women, celebrated its 105th anniversary by opening the Sookmyung History Hall, located on the first floor of the Centennial Hall, on Monday, October 5, at 11 am.

Gracing the opening ceremony with their presence were Young-sil Han, the president of Sookmyung; Young Jin, National Assembly and Grand National Party member; Jang-hyun Sung, chief officer of Youngsangu; other chiefs of jurisdictional organizations; Ji-young Ryu, president of the whole alumni association; and the board members of the alumni association. President Han expressed her gratitude to Mr. Eun-gyun Mok, the curator, and other professors and staff in her congratulatory address, stating that “the opening of Sookmyung History Hall has been a long-cherished ambition.” The curator, Eun-gyun Mok, explained the significance of the Sookmyung History Hall in his introductory greeting, describing its history as being “like the root of a tree.”

Sookmyung History Hall was designed with the idea of Sookmyung nurturing historical and international talents who follow in the tradition of those who devoted themselves to national independence, democratization and the educational save-the-nation movement of the Daehan Imperial family.
The History Hall’s base work began in September 2009, and its Establishment Committee was formed in December, beginning with visits to related organizations and collecting historical data.

Sookmyung confirms the main direction of the exhibition as being ‘the Dream of the Imperial Family, the Spirit of the Nation, the Power of Sookmyung.’ It was with this direction that blueprints for the History Hall’s construction were made in February 2011, through consultation with subordinate staff.

Sookmyung History Hall will provide visitors with the opportunity to experience and reflect on Korea’s modern history by showing the succession of the Daehan Imperial Family, the development of the Women’s movement and Sookmyung’s development from its beginning, as Myunshin Women’s School, to Sookmyung Women’s School, to Sookmyung Women’s College, and finally, to Sookmyung Women’s University.

In the Sookmyung History Hall, modern historic relics from the late Chosun Empire to the Daehan Empire can be viewed. Also on display are: the royal coat of arms conferred in 1943 by the Queen Youngchin to the summa cum laude graduate of Sookmyung Women’s College; the national flag, or Taegukki, of Myungshin Women’s School (registered as national property #468, a duplicate); the Daehan Imperial Family’s embodiment of the educational save-the-nation idea; King Youngchin’s Saguesam (coming of age attire); and other ceremonial trimmings.

The officer of the Sookmyung History Hall affirmed that “the opening of the History Hall will be a chance for Sookmyung’s students to confirm their vision of Sookmyung as a leading university with creative leadership and national pride, and to reflect on the depth of the nation’s history.
