Our university opened an online exhibition of Korean history and culture with Google

Our university’s Museum showcased the “Korean Heritage” project in collaboration with Google’s online art exhibition platform, “Google Arts & Culture,” and is conducting the first online exhibition which enables the users to view Korean history, culture, and art via a single website. The “Korean Heritage” project, which was completed through collaboration between Google and nine of Korea’s leading historical and cultural institutions including our university’s Museum, is an online exhibition that encompasses the history of ancient Kingdom of Silla, royal culture of the Joseon Dynasty & the Korean Empire, traditional folklore, and key intangible cultural assets, where users can view more than 30,000 artworks and artifacts with important historical value.

Especially, based on the cutting-edge technology of Google such as the Art Camera’s ultra-high resolution images, Street View, Expeditions, and 360° images, the artworks preserved in museums/cultural institutions and key historical sites have been opened to the public via online enabling Korea’s colorful history and unique culture to be shared and experienced by the world through a new method.
Our university’s Museum will be showing various collections in addition to the Folding Screen of Embroidered Chochungdo (Grass and Insects) and Clothes/Ornaments Worn by Prince Heungwan, which have been designated as important folklore material, through the online exhibition. In particular, the details of 20 representative collections can be seen in gigapixel images that have been photographed using the Art Camera of Google Arts & Culture. The Art Camera, a robot camera released by the Google Cultural Institute in May 2016, is a ultra-high resolution camera that can show artworks such as paintings in ultra-high definition of 1 billion pixels by photographing them in gigapixels. By connecting several hundreds of close-up images, it creates a single complete picture in incredible detail which shows even the minute details that can’t be seen with the naked eye.
When the Folding Screen of Embroidered Chochungdo (Grass and Insects) which has been photographed in gigapixels is zoomed-in, the elaborate embroidery techniques and colors that can’t be determined with the naked eye can be seen via online. Along with 20 gigapixel images, around 200 collections are showcased in high-resolution images to allow the users to search various artifacts of Sookmyung Women’s University Museum online.

In addition, the
online visitors can see the interactive stories which touch on the life history
of women in Korea and the meaning of embroidered handicrafts/traditional
patterns through the 5 online exhibitions opened as the “Korean Heritage”
Project such as
The Director of Museum (Department of Environmental Design) Lee Jin-min said, “The Korean Heritage Project will provide a new experience of enjoying Korean history and cultural highlights via PC or mobile devices without the limitations of time and space based on Google’s technology,” and “Especially, the partnership with Google has become a great opportunity to introduce our university’s collections to the online visitors worldwide.”
