Calligraphy Fan Making” Event Held to Commemorate Hangul Proclamation Day

Sookmyung Women’s University hosted the ‘Calligraphy Fan Making’ event for international students on October 5th, right before Hangul Proclamation Day.

 

The event took place at the Han Sangeun Lounge located in the Centennial Hall. It was organized to solve the curiosities international students have about Hangul, Korea’s native letters. The event gave the students a chance to experience the beauty within Hangul by designing Hangul calligraphy.

Approximately 40 international students and 20 students from the URINK group, who were there to help international students, attended the event which started from 2 pm. They watched a 30-minute presentation which introduced Hangul. Afterwareds, the students answered a simple quiz which taught them some basic information about Hangul.  

 

The ‘Fan Making’ started at 2:40 pm. Fans were decorated with interesting phrases and drawings. The international students designed the fans with famous quotes and sometimes even humorous phrases.

Bui Tuat Nyong, a student from Vietnam stated, “I drew Korea’s traditional clothing Hanbok and instrument on this fan. I will forever treasure this as a souvenir. Thank you for holding this meaningful event on Hangul Proclamation Day.”

 

The host, Office of International Affairs, asserted that they organized the event in order to spend a meaningful Hangul Proclamation Day by introducing the spirit and culture of Hangul to deepen the understanding students have of Korea and teach them the virtue of Hangul.
